I'm going to be in Cancun next week and want to shop for some tequila. I was wondering if there are any chain liquor stores like in Puerto Vallarta. When I have gone to PV I have gone to the La Playa stores to buy my tequila, is there anything similar in Cancun? I know about La Europea, just wondering if there are other places.
The absolutely best place for tequila is La Europea. I live downtown and shop at the one across the street from Walmart. There is one in the HZ, at about km 12. If you pass Plaza La Isla on the right, it is just after it, before Dominos. Not sure if they mark up the prices above the downtown store or not. If you are looking for a great gift of Tequila I would recommend Corralejo Reposado. It is under $200 pesos per liter, is very smooth, and it comes in a very tall, round, blue bottle. It is my #1 gift item when I need one when going to the states. I actually am pretty sure it was $181 the other day, right at $15 US.
If after the above reply you are still looking for chain stores try Wal Mart, Costco, and Sam's Club.
Just a thought Raider, but you might check out this tequila cream, sort of like Bailey's but with tequila as the base. It is sure not tequila but if you would drink Bailey's this is an option. It is left of the back left corner, at La Europea, in the area where Bailey's is sold. It is called 1921 Tequila Cream I think. I happen to be out of it at the moment but it is the bottle on the right. Quite tasty really. I enjoy over ice, as I do Bailey's Original.
TJ is that a flavored Tequila cream. There was a Tequila Rose Strawberry drink that was pretty big around here, MN, a few years back. I dont know if there was much Tequila in it but my wife sure was a fan of it. Just curious on the flavor. I was also hoping you would chime in on this topic for RaiderJ. As I consider you to be the Tequila shopping expert around here.
Gonzo, Sort of like a Bailey's Original flavor with the booze being tequila. You are right that it is creamy sort of sipping drink, on the rocks or just straight up. I have tried a couple of these things over the years and this one is the best I have tasted. Don't remember the alcohol content but it is not hi octane. Very smooth. The lid is hard to get off is the only thing I don't like but it doesn't slow me down. I am on a Malbec kick at the moment.
In the Hotel Zone, La Europea is a great place to find several brands of tequila. There is a slight markup, at least there was when I was there last, in comparison to the Centro (Downtown) location. I also found very decent prices at the store just south of, and literally a few steps away from Margaritaville. While it looks as if they should have excellent prices, based on the store's appearance, Plaza La Fiesta seems to not be as competitive as they used to be in the past. T.J., you're missing something from those pics, certain shot glasses I believe? If you are into Malbec at the moment, I highly recommend you check out Navaro Correas (sp). I tried this wine at a restaurant on Av. Yaxchilan called La Farola de CancĂșn (Parrilla Argentina). I found a bottle at La Europea but cannot remember the price. Salud People, 212eric (Author)
