We travel a lot, but all of our trips are usually 2-4 hour direct flights. We have an Hawaii trip coming up this winter, and am looking for some suggestions for the best way and time of the day to fly.

No non-stops out of STL, and the shortest travel out is 12 hours, and 10 hours coming back.

Do you like to leave HI at night coming back, or during the day?

Would you prefer a short layovers at LAX, or a longer ones?

A stop over somewhere could also be a choice, but our travel time is somewhat limited, and I don't want to have a bunch of travel days. Not really any friends or family to visit on the west coast.

When I travel a long distance, across several time zones, I like to arrive late afternoon. That way you have time to do what you need on the first day, head to bed, and be in sync with the local time in the morning.

As for trip time, I'm a "just go" person. Once I start, just get me there, be it 12 or 24 hours later. No sense in prolonging the agony. :D

I've flown from Columbia, South Carolina to Hawaii as well as Chicago, IL to Hawaii a few times from both places.

It's such a long trip that I always stopped to spend the night in Los Angeles for a day or so....just depending on what all I wanted to do in LA.

Back in my young & beautiful days I use to do voice overs and extra work in films and I would try to coordinate my dates to pick up some extra spending cash prior to hitting the beach in Hawaii......

Sometimes you don't have the luxury of adding days to your trip, but I always tried to only make the trip if I could break it up with a stop in LA. That way I never needed an extra day just to adjust.

I also tended to do a gradual time adjustment starting about a week before leaving for Hawaii, that helped quite a bit.

    What ever you decide....have fun!

When crossing a few time zones, I try to show up as early as possible.

Force yourself to spend the day awake. A few drinks at night to ensure a good night sleep... Next morning, your internal clock is time adjusted.

On the way back, I like to show up as late as possible. Get home late, have a few drinks to ensure a good night sleep... Next morning, your internal clock is time adjusted again.

    Notice a pattern?

    Have a great trip!

I will probably just book the most reasonable flights with the fewest stops. Thanks for you help.
