Hi everyone - hope you all made it through the rain unscathed! An American friend of mine is visiting his dad who lives in Cancun and has decided to stay, so he's looking for a job. He's 25 years old, clean-cut, well spoken and intelligent. I was hoping someone could give locations of the major ESL schools - Harmon Hall, Berlitz, Inter-Lingua, and Quick Learning - by landmark/physical location as well as address (the address system is a bit confusing to him right now). He lives near a big City Sports heading away from the Hotel Zone (like, past Temptations). Do the schools hire without visas, and will they sponsor them? As always, thanks so much for your help - I get the keys to my new apartment next week thanks to this forum Kim
The only one I know of is Harmon Hall over by Costco. (that is because teh ONLY reason we go to Cancun is either to go to CUN or Costco and I see it every time we stock up)
Harmon Hall: off of Av Tulum. There's a driveway right before Plaza Galerias and after Boxito which you take and it'll lead you into a big parking lot...the entrance is around the back of that building. And no, they'd never hire without proper documentation. I had way too many immigration employees in my classes for that. Berlitz: coming from Av Tulum heading away from the hotel zone, it's on Uxmal after the bus station and before you hit that huge intersection with Av Chichen Itza...in a plaza on your right. Interlingua is across from the Walmart located downtown on Coba. Quick Learning...don't know. Harmon Hall (can't speak for the others) will give a job offer and then provide the documents needed from the employer side to get an FM3.
I'm a little confused on your points about Harmon Hall - does one need to already have a visa/FM3 to get hired or will they hire then help with paperwork, provide justification, etc.? Sorry if I'm misreading. Thanks for such detailed directions! Kim
No, Harmon Hall will give you a job offer and then help you get an FM3 that allows you to work legally for them. You can get a job offer while here with an FMT (tourist visa).
Harmon Hall Av Tulum will be moving in the next couple of months, they've got a location lined up at Plaza las Americas. They have a second location across from Paseos Cancun, the kindergarten is on Kohunlich and their primary school is on Kabah near Costco. Interlingua has moved too, not across from Walmart anymore. I believe they've opened in the Chedraui plaza on Kabah (have only seen the sign outside, can't confirm it). The schools are very limited in how many foreigners they can hire at one time (10% of the employees can be foreigners, most schools have 20 or fewer teachers). They will provide a letter offering you employment then you'll have to do the hoop jumping for your FM3. Suggest using a lawyer for sure!
gabachayctca & Canuck - Are you sure Berlitz is still on Uxmal? I presume you mean in the little plaza to the right of Blockbuster. I may be mistaken, often am, but I thought they were gone from there. BG Kim - Harman Hall, there is also on on Kohunlich, which is the street running off Andres Quintana Roo at the light in front of Paseo Cancun, on the City Club end of the shopping center, where Carls Jr is on the corner. Going that way it will be on the left a couple of blocks before you get to the first light, at La Luna. If you are by the Futbol, aka Soccer Stadium, that light is La Luna if you go west. Then make a right on Kohunlich, which I think is the 2nd light. and where Soriana is on the left after the light. My woman took English classes there and really liked it. She even learned how to fuss at me in English now.
TJ, I haven't checked Berlitz in a while, last I saw they were still there but they could have moved.
Berlitz is still on Uxmal, to the right of Blockbuster, between the bus terminal and Av Chichen Itza. My confusion is that the sign is not over the entrance, but rather over what looks from the street to be a walled in storefront. But, alas, the entrance is left of the sign on the face of the building.
