Just an observation but, what's up with the price of Limes? A month ago they were on sale in Walmart for 7 pesos a kilo. Now they are 39 pesos a kilo. I am surprised that there aren't any protesters in the streets. Seems as though increasing the price of a kilo of tortillas by 1 peso almost caused huge problems until the government stepped in and assured everyone that an increase was not neccessary. Does this price increase happen every year at this time?
Two recent theories.... Precio Acidito: Limón - Nota - Finanzas - www.aztecanoticias.com.mx Por narco, el precio del kilo de limón sube a 34 pesos - Noticias
So, I guess it is either that the harvest time in Michoacan is over (supply and demand) or it is because the narcos charge a fee on the shipments. Probably a little of both but just goes to show you how everything bad gets blamed on organized crime. Which is also probably half truth and half paranoia--and the other half a subconscious wish to blame it on the "bad guys" instead looking at the tons of other reasons and solutions that could be addressed. (Did you notice the picture of the YELLOW Michoacan "limones"?) Fortunately I have a huge tree that produces all year long! :huepfen021:
I also haven't seen ANY jitomate at Walmart gran Plaza on my last 2 visits (2 weeks ago and 4 weeks ago) What's going on?
I read an article somewhere recently on the prices of this year compared to last year for fruits and vegetables. 3 or 4 varieties showed dramatic upward movement in prices, while the others, maybe 10-12, showed very modest increases in prices. Of course, the products I buy the most of had the big jumps. I hate it when that happens. But oranges, historically have huge up and down fluctutions during the year, both in terms of price and quality. This can only be due to the supply and demand, the supply being dictated by the growing seasons. Growing up in the Florida city that is the home of Tropicana, I remember well that the big citrus plant hiring and laying off huge numbers of factory workers during the year. It was a great summer job for students, incluing me, because you could get a job the moment school was out for the summer and then you got laid off a couple of months later, which gave us a month to screw around at the beach before heading back to school.
Oddly, the price of the 5 lb bag of carrots at Costco, has dropped from $74.90 to $69.90. Not the cheapest carrots in town but big and good. Less waste if you cut of the ends as less carrots involved.
Finally....I picked up a few kilos of limes yesterday at the Mega on Kabah for $2.90 per kilo. Also got some watermelon for $2.90 per kilo, Cucumbers $3.90 per kilo and Oranges for $4.90 per kilo. I love it when the prices are this low........only if the price of avocados would come back down to earth, things would be great.
Alright, lime season is back....$1.90 per kilo today in the Mega. Somehow, it is the small things that make life that much better here.
