    How did you learn spanish?

Did you visit a language school? had a private teacher? or on the way?

What will you recomend to someone who is moving to live to Cancun?

    Thanks
    Maria

I just speak, speak, and speak with as many native speakers as I can ... who don't speak English.

I am going to be trying either El bosque, OR Amerispan in January. Heard good things about both!

    Amerispan

Elle, do you happen to know the address of the school you referred to as "Amerispan"?

I've been taking private lessons with a very lovely woman located in Market 28. Send me a pm if you want details. She's American and has been living in Mexico for 30 years, lots of teaching experience and she has great rates.

They say that the best way to learn a language is to take a lover who only speaks that language.

Unfortunately my lover is bilingual, so my Spanish is weak. HAHA!

RiverGirl beat me to it! I was at an advanced beginner level when I met my husband (who spoke not a word of English at the time) and am now as close to bilingual as I'll ever get. I'd spend as much time as possible OUT of Cancun, where people tend to speak more English and it's easier to socialize in English.

That's so funny RG and gabacha and so true! Laura doesn't speak English (yet, we are working on it) and so I've went from being able to more or less hold a conversation to being able to 'speak my mind' with some of the terribly rude Taxi drivers I've encountered :D

I had studied Spanish for about 5 years combined of college prep/University courses then lived in Zacatecas for a summer and studied abroad in Veracruz. After all that (and not being fluent much to my dismay) I used this site to supplment:

    http://www.123teachme.com/

Which is free and has a course structure not so dissimilar to the Uni courses I've taken. Also, immersion is key. At work in the US I'd often listen to Mexican radio and any time I was somewhere with satellite TV, the first stops were the Mexican channels.

    Whatever you choose good luck!
