This is a re-post of of a Cozumel Trip Advisor posting. If it happens there, it can happen in this area also.

I took my guests to the gas station to ensure that they would not be scammed. But they were scammed, until I got into the frecas. As soon as you take your eye off the gas meter, the attendant resets the meter and shuts off the gas pumping to your car. Since the new meters are LED screen models, they then re-program 200, 300, 400, 500, pesos, etc. to show up on the screen as a pre-set amount for the next customer really quick. he then says "look" here is the amount. But the liter amount is at 0.00 because it is pre-set for another fill. When I got out of my car which was parked on the side, the attendant saw me an he knew who I was. I told him in Spanish that he was a thief and I was going to report him as the Peso amount was 200 but the liter amount was 0.00. He then said ok 100 pesos. I told my guests to pay for the 3.5 gallons and lets go. The bad part was that when they returned the car, the meter was not at full as the attendant shut the pump off midstream and reset the pump.

Please be aware of this scam and don't take your eye off the pump!!

WOW. Great advice and a great warning. I always fill my car and compute the mpg (American car) right at the pump. Nothing has ever looked suspicious thank goodness.

I always make sure the pump starts at zero and always note the liters when paying. But this is a great warning.

    Thanks a bunch,

We only buy gas from one Pemex station in Cancun, the one on the corner of Xcaret and Kabah (next to Chedraui, across from Soriana). They promise Litro por Litro and it seems to be true.

Nearly every time either of us has bought gas from another station in Cancun the amount of gas they say they put in the car is too high. We both routinely run the tanks to nearly empty and fill them all the way up, so we always know within a couple of liters how much gas the cars need.

I got royally ripped off at the Pemex on Colosio near the McDonald's just north of Campestre. They were the worst ever.

But lots of stations around skim a little bit I think. That's why I stick to the one station that's never ripped us off.
