Does anyone know why La Cantinita was abruptly shut down last week? It has yet to reopen. Just curious...that's all
Do you mean Cantinerias, on the corner of Coba and Yaxchilan? They seemed to shut down last week. I heard rumors about remodeling, but I'm not sure to be honest.
Just checked around on Twitter and Facebook, seems they've been shut down for violating the anti-smoking law. So say the tweets, I haven't seen anything official!
Read a few days back that government officials went on inspections and either fined, suspended and/or closed a handful of businesses violating the anti-smoking laws depending on the seriousness of the violations. Play City was reportedly issued a suspension of sorts while Bulldogs was supposedly closed for an unreported amount of time. The articles also stated that the inspections shut down a few bars and restaurants on Yaxchilan much to the waiters and mangers chagrin given the current economic climate. One of the pieces mentioned the inspectors went as far as to hunt for cigarette butts at some places.
WOW.. that's some BIG news for a town that sells itself on beach, boobs and booze. Thanks for the info. A friend of mine works there but she didn't tell me yet why they closed, just that she was given a paid vacation.
I read that too. Yea, Tony's and Los Arcos were 3 of the half dozen or so places on Yaxchillan named.
I am surprised about Los Arcos. That is a place I go to alot and they are good about getting ppl outside to smoke. And the regulars that go there that I know always leave the place. What a bummer. Did the mention how long the suspensions were?
"temporarily" is all it says, this is almost a week ago so could well be open again now: Clausuran siete restaurantes-bar en la Yaxchilan - Grupo SIPSE, sipse.com
Some of you may have noticed the "smoking section" at the La Taberna on Yax was closed too.. even though by all accounts the owner there was trying his best to be in compliance with the law as best he understood it, with a dedicated and closed off section away from the rest of the non-smoking patrons.... can't say that I really feel bad for the places that were blatantly breaking the law, and I do like being able to go out and not smell like I've smoked a carton when I get back home... but I do feel a bit sorry for the employees who will go without pay for a few days/weeks as a result of the crackdown...
