We are looking to book in april. However I read somewere that the first 3 weeks of april is jellyfish mating season and you can't go in the ocean. If any of you april addicts can answer this question it would be greatly appreciated. We went last year in the end of may but my wife can't wait that long for a week of topless drunken debauchery. Please tell me if this is something to worry about or not. :daveandmo:
We were there end of April and there was a TON of mating! Tentacles everywhere! thankfully none of it was jellyfish though
Yes, there is some truth in this. The thimble jellyfish mates between March and August, April May June are the peak months. Their microscopic larvae are called sea lice and can sting and cause a rash, they can get trapped between bathing suits and your skin and the friction can cause them to fire their stingers. When they mate they all mate at once and I recall seeing ribbons of the sealice several hundred yards long in years gone by. Haven't seen any in the last few years (and I'm out on the cruise weekly) although I'm sure they haven't stopped mating More info at Sea Lice in Cancun | Prevention and Treatment | Cancuncare
Well Steve. I read through the link you put up and it seems the only solution to avoiding this hideous problem is to swim naked. Seems like a simple solution and we will do our part.
I was stung pretty badly by an adult jellyfish in Florida when I was 14 and it wasn't actually that bad. Now that I am waaaaaay old enough to drink if it were to occur in Cancun, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt at all! Kelly
One boy, jellyfish orgy, why am I not surprised. Tandy was stung a couple of september's ago. Someone else was stung last April. never fun, I just stay at the pool bar.
I am good with small Jelly fish we have been stung a few times and it’s not so bad just don’t scratch. Now we were snorkeling in Jamaica and came across a jelly fish that was bigger than my wife. She screamed so loud needless to say we did stay in the water. Not sure what kind it was but it was huge!!!
