My husband, son and I are going to Cancun during the first week of May. I am really interested in checking out Isla Mujeres and going to the south point to the ruins and lighthouse area. Does it make sense to pay for a tour to do this; or is it better to just take a ferry over and rent a golf cart? Can the south side only be accessed through Garrafon park?

I just went over with my Dad...Rent a Golf Cart...adds to the Adventure. And really it is just one small ruin....and lots of modern steel statues....bizzar in my opinion. You don't have to access Garrafon at all, unless you want to use their facilities. Make sure you return the rental back before the time is up. They will charge you a full hr. We were 6 min late, and the beeeeeeeeep didn't want to hear any excuses.

we went 2 weeks ago. Just take the city bus to the water taxi. I think it was 40 dollars US round trip. Then rent a golf cart. Takes an hour to get around the island. We stopped and checked thins out. Theirs a place to eat overlooking the ruins good food great view.

Thanks! How much do the golf cart rentals cost? And how far from the south end of the island will we be when we get dropped off by the ferry?

last march the golf carts were 500 pesos for all day which was $38 usd at the time. You are about 5 to 7 miles from the south end of the island when you get off the ferry. we loved the sculpture park which costs about $3 usd each to enter and the person taking your money would like a 10 peso tip but not mandatory. There is a beautiful walkway with spectacular views of the ocean and cliffs. this walkway goes to garrafon park but there is a sign asking you not to go further if you have not entered through garafon. imho if I got to isla early i'd rent the golf cart all day unless i was going to spend the day at garrafon in which case i'd just take a taxi to garrafon.

Rent a cart for the day, take your time looking around, it's beautiful, why be in a hurry to see the island in an hour..explore!

garrafon is an all inclusive park at the south end of isla mujerus that has snorkeling, swiming, zip line and food. also has a walkway into the sculpture park. the sculptures are mostly as big or bigger than an adult but smaller than a car. mapchick is rite on, don't be in a hurry. i have never attended garrafon just walked past so if i'm off base please pipe up.

Isla Mujeres is a charming place, and well worth a visit. On the north end of the island are beautiful beaches, and a Mexican village which retains its village feel, in spite of everything.

There are more good restaurants per square mile than there is in Cancun centro, with lots of variety, in part because of the European ownership of many of them.

Early risers can enjoy stunning mornings; and, for those who can't make it up that early, there's the fantastic sunsets!

Cheaper golf cart prices are available further from the ferry landings, but I've never been able to do better than 400 pesos/24 hours, unless I was renting multiple carts.

now thats the positive words I like to hear what would be a nice real mexican restaraunt to visit on the island for a meal not looking at something commercialised but more a clean respectable island eaterie that is not incoming.
by the way what time are the sunsets in may.
