I have already booked my airline tickets for me, my wife and our 4 boys (9, 12, 13 and 14)... Me and my wife were at Cancun about 6 years ago so I am sure lots has changed. It was just me and her.... We rented a jeep and did our own site seeing..... we took off thru the jungle with no worries..... But with my 4 boys I am a little worried..... I dont usually listen to rumors or the media hype so I wanted to check with the experts....

Is it still safe down there? Are there any do's and dont's? Thanks everyone....

Cancun is probably safer then your own hometown. Obviously with kids you will not be all over the place but rather in the tourist populated areas. You will all be just fine.

Tourists are not at any more risk than they were on your last visit 6 years ago imho.

There have been a few problems over the last year or so between drug gangs and the authorities who aim to control them such as the Police and Army, but these problems don't happen in the areas tourists generally frequent. The major problems in Mexico you'll hear about on the TV and in the newspaper are happening thousands of miles from here.

You shouldnt worry about renting a car and going off the beaten track, just keep your wits about you as you would in any unfamiliar place and also be careful to stay within the speed limits to avoid any unwanted attention from the Traffic Police.

Wow that is encourageing.... Thank you for the info....

Now if I can find a good hotel/resort. We are looking for a comfortable bed, clean room with a nice pool. I just talked to my wife and she doesnt care about the beach..... We will go other palces to swim at the beach. We like the big resorts close to shopping and resturants. Last time we chose the Hyatt Rgency at the South Point.... We might go back there but I heard it went downhill.... It had a good location. Any suggestions?

Cancun Palace is really nice and just a bus ride to anything you may want to see and do.

    Safe? Heck yes!!

MikeF do some googling, ok? Google Cancun Safe, Riviera maya safe, playa del carmen....the whole Cancun/Riviera Maya is about 1/5 of the Mexican economy....so, they make sure it is safe from the druggers and smugglers.....just go and enjoy yourselves....!

I agree with everything that has been said. It's rare that a tourist has any serious problems, and even then most times its a result of excesses and/or stupidity. (ie: people thinking they can drink all day without consequence...looking for drugs, being belligerent, etc...)

As for renting a car, aside from making sure to obey the traffic laws, should you be pulled over, take note of the name plate on the officers uniform and greet him by saying "hola, oficial (what name plate says)" this way he will know that you are paying attention and have his name.

    Enjoy your vacation... :icon_mrgreen:

I would recommend the Royal Resorts. They are family friendly and provide a great experience while you are in Cancun.

Please check the web-site at Royal Resorts, The best vacation ownership in Cancun.

I have stayed there numerous times with my children (who are now adults) and other family members.
