Hearing about how powerful the drug cartels are...is Cancun still safe for tourist? Anyone have any statistics?
Safer than Detroit! Safer than Chicago last body count I heard..... If you stay away from drugs then the Drug Cartels don't care who you are, hence you're safe. Killing tourist is bad for business. Powerful people get upset when tourists don’t show up. Even Drug Cartels don't like un-needed heat so they try like hell not to shoot tourist. Sorry if I sound over the top. It's just that I love the way the media plays on things. Last year during Spring Break they told everyone to stay away from Mexico because the drug cartels were killing people in Phoenix. Sounds like Phoenix was the place to stay away from since there were dead people there and no dead people in Cancun. Don't know how the public never makes that connection.... Jamie
I was privileged to be able to look at the death certificates of foreign tourists who died while on vacation in Cancun/Riviera Maya in a 3+ year period (part of 2006 to early 2009). In that time not one foreign tourist died from anything having to do with drug cartels, mafias or any of that. The leading causes of death to foreign tourists in this area are heart attacks, drowning and/or choking (on food and on vomit from being too drunk) and car accidents. So wear your seatbelt, don't drink too much, don't overexert yourself and be careful when swimming. Have a great vacation!

Please forgive me if I am mistaken, but wasn't there a similar thread on the old forum by a Sharibaby concerning the safety of Cancun? Perhaps I am having Deja vu. But I thought that they did decide to go on their vacation. Perhaps not... no? Anyhoo... it's all good. Go on down and have some fun and sun.
