I'm sorry if this has been discussed on numerous occassions but i wanted to find out whether you all have the same problems as me?

I am on Infinitum 2mb Broadband through Telcel (was told this was the fastest option available in Cancun) and this started okay with download speeds from the web on a standard download of up to 200kb/sec, well as the months has passed, the performance has gone down and down to such that if i download stuff that i desperately need for work, it's dropping to 8kb/sec and either downloads after hours or dropping out all together and i have to start again, which as you can imagine is very, very annoying when i need 500mb files that Warner Bros have put online for me. To make sure it wasn't the server it was coming from, i've tried several download sites and get the same issue, it's been like that for the past 3 weeks but before that it was getting slower and slower anyway. After exploring the options, this has to be an ISP issue, i have noticed it not so bad after midnight and downloads at 80kb constantly or so i think, i'm generally asleep, however this doesn't help when i need stuff in the day like many of us probably do, it is also affecting surfing speed.

I've been doing speedtests via speedtest.net and i get a maximum of 400kb/sec, average of 250kb/sec, sometimes lower, which 400 is about right for 2mb broadband, no? However this is not refelected in performance and i went into the program to look at stats for this area which gives a list of best performers in Cancun, the lowest on the list was 837kb/sec and the highest on the list was someone called Avantel which stood at a whopping (For cancun anyway) 1578 kb/sec!!

My question is, does anyone else have these issues?

    Who do you all use?

Who are Avantel and what is the fastest package you can get in Cancun, surely someone has 8mb nowdays?

Why are download speeds in America/Asia so much better than Mexico?

On the worldwide list, Sony ISP sat at the top at a huge 33,555 kb/sec, that's a film in minutes, crazy speeds, we can only dream of that here, maybe in 20 years, hey!

Basically, anyone who has a better experience than me, please let me know, it is very important that i improve the situation as i have to dial into computers in the US for work and download regulary and if i cant, i don't have a job for much longer!

You mean Telmex, Sam, I suppose... although it seems that now you can get a connection with Telcel with a Blackberry.

Not only have I those problems, but also loss of connection. If there are several wireless networks in the area, I get disconnected from Infinitum and connected to another one... which of course doesn't work which leaves a mess in my work. I am not a specialist but I guess it is the weakness of the signal. I called them, they say (of course) it is my computer problem

I used to be with Avantel a century or so ago, before Infinitum, they had only dial-up. I was very happy with them, good rates and good customer service, but their techonolgy was far behind.

I heard they are coming back with a new phone company, I can't remember the name now, but I posted a message about them here (too lazy to search  ). I looked for them, couldn't find them. Some people said Plaza las Americas... then they just moved to Plaza las Palmas, they are unknown there. Then I have been told they have not arrived here yet, they are in Merida..... who knows??? Seems (?) to be a dangerous competition.

Good luck... and learn patience :D

    http://www.avantel.com.mx/

Hopefully things will just get better slowly, this week i just get loss of connection and a very very slow speed.

I think they have 24mb or faster in London now, i can only dream!

Yes, It is Axtel. And if you go to Contactos.... cancun is not there, only Merida. But when I went to the administrative office of Plaza las Americas, they knew them well. They had just left  . Who knows.

I also HOPE Mexico will improve slowly! (Only slowly). I am so angry today (well... not anymore, right now, at that very moment, everything is ok)

I had a little (minor) problem, I couldn't sign in on Live Messenger. Since some people don't know Yahoo, I need to have it. I emailed them, they nicely answered. After some test, it appeared it might be port 1863 that was blocked.

So I called Prodigy. What a bad idea!!! After a few hours on the phone, changing this and that, NOTHING AT ALL was working. No connection. It seems they know nothing about the modem's ports. Finally probably to get rid of me and since he didn't know, the guy told me he would send me a new modem. Yesterday (less than 24 hours later) the modem arrived with a guy to help me to install it. Guess... Nothing was working either. A few more hours on the phone. Finally (miracle?), it works. For how long? We don't know!

Yesterday also, I received the invoice from Cablemas that I have in my studio. $1100. What??? I call the manager, the number doesn't exist! So I drove all the way to Kabah from Punta Sam, met him, the phones and computers have failed  Can you only imagine? At last, I learned that they had charged me what I had already paid.

Mexico!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :viva:  I just lost almost 3 days for nothing.

Dream Sam, dream of London, like I dream of Paris... until I go there and notice what is wrong there. You can't have internet and the fog here, right?

For a good part of the day I'm getting a fairly consistent 1570 down and 200 up which is good based on our rated speed of 2000 minus about 20% overhead, although in better developed areas that should only be 15%.

That being said, however, I have noticed periodic slowdowns during the early afternoon. Since ADSL is immune to the kind of bandwidth sharing congesation that sometimes happens in large cable TV communities, you have to assume that TelMex is having hardware and fiber troubles exiting wherever their central office in Q. Roo is located. Too many new accounts, too few DSLAMs at the central office and too few lines exiting the CO.

Even if there was an alternative carrier, they'd still be piggybacking on TelMex's lines, so I can't see that helping the situation. Complaining to TelMex isn't going to get you anywhere either. The alleged telephone support people aren't particularly useful and the issues we are facing need to be addressed from much higher in the tree. I had the fiber troubles confirmed to me by someone I know inside. You'll not get anyone sitting at a desk opposite Sam's Club to admit anything.

Right now in Cancun development is outstripping infrastructure as more and more huge condos climb out of the ground while the number and length of the daily traffic jams increases, demands on water treatment increase while the stench of raw sewage drifts in from the Lagoon and impeded internet traffic becomes the norm.

Almost every new apartment will come with at least one automobile, will need at least one telephone line, will want one ADSL connection and will flush at least one toilet at least once a day. I don't see much being done to address any of those conditions.

As far as I can see, in the typical chaos that passes for planning in Cancun, it's not going to get better anytime soon.

One last thing, Sam. If they stuck you with one of those 2-Wire 2700 Series Modem/Wireless routers, scream bloody murder to get it replaced or at least get on the waiting list for a Motorola when they become available. The 2-Wire is a major POS. Also, check your PM as I have a private note for you.

Yes i have a Gateway 2701HG, the internet i've got is beyond unacceptable, even in the evening, well right now 21.42 it is downloading at 8.57kb. I'm getting a new computer and although i seriously doubt the machine could have any effect i'm hoping it does, however the problem seems the same on the machine downstairs and not just on my laptop. Also i'm not on wireless i'm on an ethernet cable so it can't be that, my wife said she'll go in and see what she can do, some company phoned recentely and gave ingrid a number for Avantel but it won't go through and i'm sure i'm stuck with TelMex and like you say any other company would surely have to use their lines because of the monopoly situation in this country, right?

Sorry meant to say will check my PM soon and reply, sorry for the delay, spend half my day shouting at my computer.

On the speedtest i get 324 kb/s, i'm on 2mb connection sure of it so i definetly have a problem if your getting closer to 1500kbs! It downloads faster on torrents than on proper downloads, never thought i'd be saying that!!!

I have Infinitum and it has become SO SLOW work is difficult at best. For about the last month and a half during the day it is 200 - 500 kbps on a 2 MB connection. Just like the old dialup days. :( But, if you are an extreme night owl, after midnight speeds get back up to 1700kbsp.

You are right, calling, reporting to TelMex does NOTHING. I have called maybe 5-6 times in the last month only to be told the server has critical errors, they will send a technician out (who never showed), reporting this to the supervisor, whatever they wanted to say. Still no luck.

I am debating to switching to Cablemas. TelMex $600 pesos per month for dialup speed is crazy, even for Cancun. How is Cablemas speeds these days?

    cablemas

I'll probably jinx it by posting here, but my Cablemas speed has been just fine since I got a new Motorola modem. There are still some times when it's a bit sluggish but, for the most part, it's fast enough to keep me from being annoyed and frustrated.

I haven't had many outages recently either....other than one that I believe was caused by someone/something unhooking my cable wires on the roof. Cablemas sent a tech out the next day and he was even on time! He was pleasant and even seemed to know what he was doing. My cable was restored in minutes.

After checking my internet speed, he agreed that I needed a new modem. Ever since, I've had good internet speed. I had no idea Cablemas knew the meaning of "good customer service", but let's hope that my experience wasn't just a fluke.

    Infinitum

Hello All, I also agree, I have the Infinitum 2Mb service and for the past 2 weeks it been agonizingly slow during the daytime, usually averaging 200-400kbps down, this is unacceptable especially paying those Telmex crooks 599pesos/month for this garbage. The speed usually goes back to it's 'normal' 1700kbps after 11pm. I used to call Telmex and complain, but that is useless, they give you the same run around. I'm thinking of going down to the 1mb service, if they cant deliver the promised speed why keep throwing money at them. Don't you just love monopolies?
