Hi there. We are arriving on July 4, staying at the Barcelo Tucancun. Asking for help with using an international calling card to call back to the US. My daughter will hope to call back here a couple times...something I rarely do when traveling. So, I'm not sure what to expect with the card. When you use it, will you still get a charge on your hotel stay or do all of the minutes come directly from the card. Also, if you call a cell phone back in the US, will that phone be charged with a call coming in from Mexico? I know these may seem 'simple' questions but I still am hoping for the help so we know what to expect prior to leaving the US. Also, are we better off buying the card here or in Cancun? Just have her get a telcel phone card at any convienence store in Cancun. I think I got mine for $10 USD and it had 40 minutes or so on it. I called a few friends and my Mom and they got no charges. It has instructions how to use them. You just dial a No. on the card. Then a recorded message asks for the Card serial no. (a scratch off thingy) and then dial the no. you want to call. The phones are everywhere too. You do have to use one of thier phones to use the card though.
Ok...so she buys one of these cards but needs to use a specific phone? Are these phones located on the street, in the hotel or where? I've seen the signs but never pay attention since I don't call home. Also, were you calling a landline phone in the states or a cell phone? Thanks again!
WE BOOKED A PHONE THRU CANCUN VALET, AND THEY GAVE US A LOCAL TEXAS NUMBER THAT THE KIDS CAN CALL US ON. ITS NOT BAD AND THEY WILL EVEN PRE PROGRAM YOUR NUMBERS FOR YOU. ITS 5 DOLLARS A DAY AND THAT INCLUDES LIKE 8 MINUTES A DAY FREE CALLS..
I called land lines and yes you do need to use their phones. The phones are everywhere on the street not in the hotels. I dont think it would matter calling a cell phone, but I aint positive on that. There were at least 6 phones within 2 blocks of our hotel.
The Cancun Valet rental phones are the best way to go. They do airport transfers and the driver can give you your phone. Or they are delivered to your hotel. A correction or two to the East Texas Couple that I just double checked with Vic at Cancun Valet. 1. they are not $5 per day. The $5 is the minimum daily charge, which is approximately 8 minutes. I believe the cost is $.69 per minute, but per second billing, so a 30 second call costs like $.35. 2. All of all the phones have local Cancun numbers and not US numbers. Therefore it is an international call to call TO the phone from the US, but just the per minute call if calling FROM the phone to the US. Taxes are included. There is a $10 one time charge for setup, pickup and delivery of the phones. A charger is included in the price. And Cancun Valet will preprogram up to 10 numbers for like speed dialing. You give them the names and numbers when you make your online reservation. THIS IS A GREAT SERVICE THAT I HAVE USED MANY TIMES IN THE PAST AND ALWAYS RECOMMEND TO MY FRIENDS WHEN THEY ARE VACATIONING HERE. The reception is great anywhere in the Cancun area.
