My car is a 2002 model and eligible for importation, or nationalization, even though it is already here on the temporary importation permit. I once saw a gov't website where you could enter the make, model and ID # and it would give you the cost of the nationalization. But I did not bookmark it and now I cannot find it. Does anyone know the exact process for accomplishing this chore? Sort of do it yourself guide, like doing your own FM2, FM3, etc. WEBSITE or sites?? More specifically, the forms to fill out, attachments, costs, where to take them etc. I suppose the conversion makes financial sense now that tenencia is no more. I also suppose that there would be some import duty based on the value of the vehicle. I guess the main financial issue would be the cost of insurance for a national car vs a foreign registered car. Now that there is no tenencia, what happens to the license plates. Do these simply renew every year for a nominal fee? Thanks in advance for any enlightenment anyone can provide.

Got an email quote today from a broker. $1,555 US DOLLARS. He said it would only take 2-3 days. I think that's about enough. OMG. I could ship the car back to FL and bring my other car here for that. And sell the 02 for more than I can get here. Go figure.
We weighed the pros/cons of importing our cars vs. selling them in US and buying in Mexico. Ended up that for the hassle and cost it was not worth nationalizing our vehicles.
Thanks Val. I am tending to lean that way too, although I have had a FL registered car here since 2006, after my first one got killed by Wilma. I guess one alternative is to sell it cheap to another foreignor and float another one over from Port Everglades/Ft. Lauderdale or just buy one here. Decisions, decisions, it's always "sumthin".
Rather than having to locate a shipper, figure out customs, and pay for registering a vehicle--it came out cheaper and with much less effort to sell before leaving for Mexico (we sold off everything--save keepsakes). One thing that really sold us was this: https://tradein.autotrader.com/ATPages/TradeInMarketPlace.aspx The value of used cars was strong (at the time) due to the economy and tougher credit requirements for people wanting something new. So we ended up making money on both of our trade-ins. It was extremely simple, and took the sleaziness of used car-sales out of the process.
