Hey everyone, tried searching but "ice" was too short. Being first timers to Mexico this is all new to us, but the one cliche you always hear is do not drink the water unless it's bottled, fair enough. But how about ice in mixed drinks and cocktails? Keeping in mind this is our first time ever tropical so we might not have any "resistance" built up to whatever might be in the ice\water. If it's best to not get ice are the bartenders usually ok making things with no ice upon request? While on the booze topic, what exactly are the laws in Mexico with alchohol as far as public areas. I guess I mean if we're off the resort and have a beer in hand is that an offense there, or is it pretty lax. Just wondering if I should pack a cerveca or two in my backpack for the mayan ruins tour :mnm:. Countdown is on, we fly out Tuesday
We've never had any problem with the ice and most stuff you get there is going to be slushy drinks. I'd say don't worry about it at all. i wouldn't be drinking tap water or anything, especially off resort. But as far as in resort, just drink your booze and assume everything will be good. If there seems to be a problem, switch to beer :icon_wink: I've never seen anything resembling liquor laws in public. From my experience, I believe you can openly drink in public any time of day. :lotsofmichaelfs:
Everything I found on the internet indicates it is technically illegal to comsume alcohol in a public place. Personally, if I really needed the beer I'd pour it into an insulated drinking mug or MacDonald's up... Mexico Travel Tips: Drinking Alcohol in Mexico The water and ice at Temptation has been fine for us. I used to brush my teeth with bottled water but my wife started using tap water (there's sticker by the taps saying it it potable) and she didn't have a problem. I have been doing to the same since. I have drank water in the restaurants and had plenty of ice with no problems. The tequila is a different story....lol. Some resorts aren't up to the same standards with safe water, so it is a good idea to ask around when you travel.
Thanks for the replies, good to know on the ice, we were a bit worried. No problem on not bringing a beer or two with us for the trip, I just didn't want to be the only guy who DIDN'T bring one for the tour is all, I'm sure that day will be a good "break from drinking" day anyways.
TTR as well as most of the resorts treat their water supply so I wouldn't worry about it. We've never had a prob and the one's that did always blamed it on the water and not the 5th shelf booze that they consumed!! :ernaehrung005:
One of my friends got arrested for peeing in public. They didn't care about the beer in his hand. ($50 bribe got him back to his hotel) :ernaehrung015:
I would recommend the Twinrix Hep A & B vaccine. This way less worries about contracting that. That being said, I woke up in the wee hours of the morning, still bouncing off the walls, dehyraded as H_ _ _ _!! I staggered to the washroom and in my disheveled state I forgot and chugged a glass of water from the tap!! I was going for a 2nd glass when I realized SH*&%%!! I was fine! No twisties, nothing
I agree with everyone else, was at Cancun once - different resort. No problems in Cancun. Took a trip Isles de Mujares. We were told to be very cautious there. Very very very different environment. Let's just say very fun, but rustic. No running toilets. I only drank bottled beer and water there. And I see myself getting in trouble for peeing outside because I would rather squadt behind a tree rather than use the public restrooms, LOL. I'll remember to have a fifty on me just in case! Shannon
I've never had any problems with tap water at Mexican resorts. I drink it in the room and restaurants. It's filtered and doesn't worry me. I always laugh when people drink for 19 hours straight...get sick and say "must have been from brushing my teeth with tap water". When shopping at Market 21 or Playa del Carmen I always buy bottles of Sol Beer at one of the shops and drink it as I walk from shop to shop - the store will even open it for me. The police have never looked twice at me. These are streets that are closed to traffic though.
