I have HORRIBLE allergies and they only seem to be getting worse. (I never thought that was possible!) I desperately need to find a good allergist here...FAST. Since I don't know any medical terms in Spanish...and don't seem to think in Spanish when I'm struggling to breathe, I'd prefer someone that speaks some English. Someone that studied in the US would be EVEN better. I know...I know...I'm asking for too much. Maybe...but then again, maybe such a person exists. Can anyone recommend an allergist here in Cancun?? Also, where can I buy a HEPA air filtration system for my house (I think I really only need a small one for my bedroom, at this point), and a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter. My first instinct is Home Depot...but you all know that logic rarely figures into the equation here in Cancun. Thanks in advance! I am absolutely miserable and hope someone out there can help.
Susan - If you get in trouble and need a ride to the ER call me at any hour! I mean it. As for an allergist what about asking your other docs (Mauricio and Rebeca) for recommendations? I think I have both their email addresses... And yes, I would start at Home Despot but wouldn't hold my breath, no pun intended...
doc Thanks, RG! I'm seeing Rebecca at 5pm today. I'll start my mission for the air filter and vacuum another day. I don't expect it to be an easy, one-stop shopping sort of excursion so it's best to devote a full day to that little scavenger hunt. And, don't worry, you and all other friends with cars are automatically on the "call for ride to ER" list. ;-)
One important point on vacuum cleaner shopping here...make sure you see with your own eyes that they stock vac bags for your model before you buy a vac cleaner here. Liverpool and Sears both are happy to sell you vacuum cleaners that they don't stock bags for...they will order the bags for you and you can wait 3 months to get them...it's quite stupid.
this may sound corny but if your allergens are mostly inhaled consider a neti pot. It is a little post that you put a solution of salts and distilled water in. then you irrigate your hasal passages with it washing out a chunk of allergens. It does not replace good filtration but can lower your reaction http://daytimetalk.com/2007/07/25/the-neti-pot-as-seen-on-oprah/
There used to be an allergist at the chiropractic clinic next to that Smile dentist across from the Porsche museum. Not sure if he's still there.
Awww, sorry you feel crappy. Ditto what Kim said about the ride. Or if you need someone to go with you to translate if you don't find someone that speaks English. I get allergies sometimes as you know but nowhere near on a scale of how you suffer. So I know how desperate you must feel ! Let us know how you do, I can ask around if you haven't found someone already.
doc Thanks everyone! I saw an Ear/Nose/Throat specialist at Galenia today. His English was very good and I liked him. No news yet though. I have to get a CT Scan on sinuses and go from there. He has several allergists that he recommends and, after I go through a bit more of a process of elimination to determine why I feel icky, I'll probably have to see one of them. No fun at all.
I think I have developed a mold allergy since my move here... likely due to all of the moisture/mold rich concrete in the area. If I don't take a cloro-trimeton every morning my sinus will be itchy and stuffy by days end.... I've tried several times to ween myself from taking them, but without fail I have to go back to them within a few days or sneeze and drip my head off.
