I had such the shittiest day today at work. The thought of being in cancun so soon is slightly helping me keep my sanity and not kill anyone.:bash:

That was my thing... I scheduled vacation every 6 months. That was about how long I could go without killing someone. Vacations calmed me down for another six months. Works out well. :)

BTW Jamie you seem to be very knowledgeable about cancun and things to do..where is the best place to go to see some mexican markets? Would that be an Isla Mujeres thing? I would like to go and check out some handmade things and not just buy souvenirs from a regular store.

candigirlfreak is right. Market 28 is a great experience. Easy bus ride to & from the resort. I believe both R1 & R2 buses go to walmart & Market 28. They are only a couple of blocks from each other. Opens @ 9:00. Has a lot of local vendors selling goods, a drugstore, food stands, beer gardens, silver shops etc. Go early & you can be back @ the Sexy pool by late morning! Bus drivers are usually very helpful. Fare is about 75 pesos each way. I give them a buck, tell them to keep the change & they will make sure you get to where you are going.

Isla Mujeres is another option for shopping with the locals. The ferry is IMO the best way to go to the island if you are going to spend some time there. They are going back & forth almost every hour from early morning til night. You can rent a golf cart to cruise around during your time there. Takes about 45 min to go around the entire island. Make sure you do this as the back side is very beautiful. Great beach on the north end also. The booze cruises that go to the island usually allow some limited time to shop, but partying & shopping don't mix with us.

Hope this helps! Gotta get back to the Bears game now :clappyinghappy::clappyinghappy:

Market 28 is a good place to start. It has gotten a little more "touristy" over the years as more tourist go. They still have handmade and local things; just the prices are starting to rival department stores. :)

Although I shop in Isla each time I go, I wouldn’t say it's a spot for bargains. They do have a few shops with different items, but you have to go back a couple blocks from the main drag where you land to find them. Silver is a good deal there.

But for Silver jewelry, don't discount Theresa's store at Temptation. She has really good quality stuff at real reasonable prices. Her stuff has to be good cause when you have a store for years in the hotel with the highest incidence of repeat visitors, who are going to see your customers again and again. Stop in a take a look. Lots of variety and lots of nice choices.

There also is the market in the hotel zone on the lagoon side, I don't know its name, but it's just past where the road splits for the big clubs. It's deceivingly deep in what's back there and we have found some good bargains in the past.

Always remember that the first price you hear when you ask how much is what they would like to make so they could close up shop for the day and head home. It's just the starting price. If you are in a building, their prices are usually pretty firm unless you buy a lot. Not to say you still can't negotiate but you won't walk out at half the price very often. Not in a building, you have a much better chance. Also go early in the day. There is a rule when working a place like that... once you make the first sale of the day, the damn is broken and more will follow. So if you get there early and get down to that last few dollars difference, you can always look at them and say "Have you made your first sale today?" If they pause, say - is it worth the few dollars to get the ball rolling?

In any market, move past the first few rows without stopping. Most people shop there and they see a lot of opportunities for sales. The deeper, the less people, the more they are willing to negotiate...
