Still don't know what you mean by "use", so I'll just offer a couple of suggestions about what would normally be the case. I would expect you could easily make wire transfers of money from your Mexican account to your U.S. account, and put that to whatever use the U.S. account allows, such as the writing of checks; you could easily use an international ATM card for withdrawals, in the U.S., from your Mexican account. (I"ve got a Mexican bank account at another bank, and these are true of my account.)

As I said, I don't know what use you were referring to, so I'm just throwing these two out in case that's what you had in mind.

My account is at Santander, and the debit card I have works around the world for cash withdrawals from ATMs, giving me cash in the currency of whatever country I happen to be in- I'm sure HSBC's service would be that good, or better!

No, you cannot treat HSBC in the states as if it is a branch of the Mexican HSBC. If you wire to HSBC in the states, it is the same as if you would wire from Banamex, Bancomer or any other Mexican bank. You cannot "use" these accounts interchangably as you could between say Bank of America in Florida and Miami. Same with Scotiabank here and in Canada.

This is my understanding anyway. There are some relationships between some of the Mexican banks and some of the US banks but it does not work the way you are hoping it does.

Yours looks like as good as guess as any at what Roberta might have meant.

I decided not to try, and just offered her a couple of suggestions of things I was confident she could do with her Mexican account; judging from her reaction, it seems to have been enough.

    V,

Actually I am a mind reader, of sorts.

By the way, there is no Roberta. CancunRoberto is Kathy and her husband. I bet I can deduce his name too.

W had lots of communication over the years, starting with lots of discussions a few years ago regarding shipping a car here. Having done it a couple of times I have sort of been deemed the de facto "expert" on that subject.

I may be totally wrong but the way I read (in the present and past tenses), sensing your uncertainty in her question, I interpreted it this way: If I open (or have) a Bank of America account in Florida, can I use it in New York????? For what, you ask? To do the things one does at banks - make deposits and cash checks. The only thing is that, in my BOA analogy, these things can be done with BOA in the states, but they CANNOT be done HSBC to HSBC across the borders. Simply put, in this case, national banks are not international banks. Presumably, since she asked about opening a "dollar account" she was speaking of a dollar account at a Mexican HSBC location. She would not have said dollar account otherwise. So, to me, she clearly was asking if going into a Mexico bank and a US Bank of the same name was akin to going into BOA banks in other states within the US.

You might have noticed that I posted a reply last night on another thread, about fortune tellers. Being a tea drinker, I feel more confident getting my fortune read using tea leaves. So I made a nice cup of tea (chai) and checked the leaves. They were clearly telling me that this is what Kathy was asking. Less beer; more tea; that will be my new mantra.

So there you go. Does that clear it up? I knew you were lost when you kept referring to Kathy as Roberta. The first time, I thought "who the hell is Roberta?" Jajaja

Have a nice day. See you late this afternoon.

A leap, in my opinion, but you may have been right.

When Kathy replied earlier on this thread she said the following:
She seems to me to have been concerned about being able to access the funds, using her ATM card from the Mexican bank, when in the US. I expect she will be able to, just as I can, from my Mexican bank account.

Others, with Mexican bank accounts, may have had a different experience.
