Where do you live in the states? To answer some of these questions, we need to know your frame of reference. It's cheap compared to NYC, about the same when compared to Waxahachie, Texas.

It's reasonably safe, compared to many cities in the U.S., but a bad neighborhood here will be just as dangerous as a bad neighborhood there.

Getting a job is mostly a matter of what you have to offer, and how much you're willing to put up with.

Nearly all the posters to this forum either have a job, or a business activity they are pursuing, so they know something about the process.

I agree with V ... it's cheap compared to the vast majority of the USA. You can find a liveable apartment downtown for about $300 US dollars a month if you're not too picky.

Getting a job can be very easy or very difficult depending on your skills, although they won't hire a foreigner to be a bartender or waiter (at least not legally). For a legal job, it needs to be something more specialized.

It's very safe unless, like V says, you choose a bad neighborhood.
