The guy on the billboard seems to be saying "It's OK, we'll put the manhole cover back on MANANA"! It's about 6 ft down to it's bottom and is filling up with garbage, no bodies yet! Ya gotta love Mexico!
Typical Tom, When you walk, you better check where you put your feet, trees roots, holes, metallic pieces etc... When you drive, you better check the cars coming from ahead, behind, on each side, starting in front of you without bothering, turning right from left side and vice-versa etc.... So WHEN do you look at the beautiful landscapes of our paradise???
The sad part is that it really and truly is not funny. It's dangerous. I've seen cars get stuck in them and seen people break their legs and all sorts of people trip and fall in them. I'm glad the city of Cancun is taking responsibility. NOT.
I know right where that is and almost fell in the damn thing on a nightly walk a couple of weeks ago. Off Kabah at the intersection where the Pemex is, between Nichupte and Yaxchilan. It has been there at least 2 or 3 weeks as I noticed it again on Monday. Where Liz used to live there was a hole in the street on her corner and it had something strange stuck in it to mark it. In the Sam's parking lot some time ago there was a hole that they stuck a shopping cart in it to mark it. It is nothing new to go around a corner and find a giant hole in the road, a manhole cover or a grate missing. You gotta love it.
I remember one time we were walking in Old Town Cancun at night and Chris stepped in this hole and went up to her knee in mud and water. Luckly she only got wet and dirty but from then on we walked looking down not around. But of course that made us easy targets for the cars wizzing by. I must say that the folks in the store across the sideway from the hole were quick to come out and help get Chris out of the hole and let her use the bathroom to clean up. Jamie
The holes all over town are enough to make a mother crazy. Even the little ones that are "blocked" with boards or whatever are just big enough for a three year old to fall into and get seriously hurt. At what age will I be able to take Max "off the leash" so to speak and let him walk by himself? He knows enough not to run into the street, but by gosh does he think all these holes are fascinating, it's a mommy nightmare. He HATES holding my hand while walking, he thinks he's Mr. Independent but I just have to put the death grip on and let him scream, we don't need a Cancun version of Baby Jessica.
In my neighborhood there's an 8 foot deep hole that's just wide enough for a slender adult to fall into. It was covered by 2 concrete registro covers, but someone took those. Then someone put an old tire in it, stuffed halfway in. But someone stole the tire after a week. Then someone put a big old plastic half-broken flower pot in it, I thought that was good because who would want to steal a busted up plastic flower pot. But steal it they did. One of these days someone is going to fall in that thing.
