http://www.krnv.com/Global/story.asp?S=9106182&nav=8faO An Inyo National Forest spokeswoman has confirmed that a hiker found items possibly belonging to missing pilot and millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett. Nancy Upham says the items were found in rugged terrain in the town of Mammoth Lakes, Calif. south east of Reno. KNBC in Los Angeles spoke with the hiker Preston Morrow. He says late Monday afternoon he found an ID with Fossett's name on it and two laminated cards along with ten $100 bills and some torn clothing. He says he found the items near the abandoned Minaret Mine. The Madera County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigating agency. It tells NBC that it will launch an aerial search sometime Wednesday. Authorities say this is standard protocol and the office will not confirm that this case has anything to do with Fossett. Fossett went missing in Sept. 3, 2007. He took off in a Citabria Super Decathon single-engine plane from William Barron Hilton's ranch near Yerington. Numerous search efforts have failed, and earlier this year Fossett's wife had him declared legally on Feb. 15, 2008. Stay with KRNV.com and News 4 for information on this developing story.
Steve Fossett made one of his round the world records in 2005 from our small town of Salina, KS. This was a big deal for our city, we have an aviation college and several students were involved in his feat. We actually had the opportunity to meet him briefly and have some photos taken with him and his friend Richard Branson. We were so sorry to hear of his disappearance last year, but now at least his family has some closure.
