A long shot I think, but anyone know a fishmonger that sells fresh herring roes here? Huevas de arenque I think is the translation. If anyone sees any about let me know please, just fancy some on toast.

    Thanks

    Mat

It's a cold water fish. They only get Vita brand herring at Costco once a year, around September. Europea only has cooked canned herring. Roe? In my dreams. Any sort.

    Thanks guys,

Yeah didn't think it was gonna happen. Another thing for the "must eat" list next time I go home :)

Go to a local mariscos restaurant and see if they have "huevos de naca", or "huevos de lisa" on their menu. The latter is mullet roe, not sure about the other, but they are very small, so it just might be herring. Anyway, if you find it to your liking, you may be able to negotiate with the owners to buy some, uncooked.

Other than that, if you ever go to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel when the charterboats come in, you may be able to negotiate for some mahi-mahi roe. I eat it whenever possible and it is at the very least, equal to the more famous shad roe.

If you are interested, you can e-mail me, and I will give you my thoughts/opinions on how to select the best roes. But then nowadays, it's hard to be too choosey.

Given that we are over-fished I'd find it hard to eat local roe. Spawning season and all.

If I find some I'll bring it to work for you to try (or maybe just hide it in your desk...)

Looks like something our cat threw up after he's been feasting on lizards.

Wanna swap it for a snackpot?
