Hello all...I need some help. I am heading to Mexico City to met my boyfriends family, and I need some ideas as to what to bring them. I am taking some treats that are made and sold in the Philly area, as Hector already loves them. But what else can I bring? I am struggling with this, and we already have a communication barrier to deal with.
Thanks in advance for your help.....

Hmm. Interesting question. You do not mention if you are buying for adults or kids or both.

Mexico City is the 8th largest city in the world, over 18 million people, so there is not much that they cannot obtain locally.

Name brand USB Flash drives are practical gifts and they cost about double in Mexico compared to US prices.

Kids may like I <3 NY tee shirts that cost you 3 for $10 if you happen to hop up to NYC.

Not sure of your budget but digital cameras cost double here.

I am trying to think of things that my friends here ask me to bring for them from my trips to the states. I would say computer stuff, cameras, Victoria Secret items (there are none in Mex City) For the older ladies they have lotions and sprays for $6 to $8 if you buy their specials of 3 for $24, 6 for $30 etc. Popular kids clothes like from Gap for Kids and Gymboree. Seasonings for the kitchen - Adobo, Mrs Dash, Texas Pete Hot Sauce. Also becoming popular are Magic Jacks which many Mexicans are now using to call one another long distance within the country. Of course they need voice quality internet on both ends of the conversation.

OK, that is my contribution. Good luck.

Post back after your trip and tell us what you took and what they liked the most.

Here are some to the things that we bring to our friends in Cancun from New England.

Real Maple Syrup. Either from NH or VT. While it used to only be packaged in 'tin cans', it can now be found in plastic sealed jugs that are safe for packing in checked bags.

Hard candies and miniature chocolates in 5 lb. bags. For some reason the candy from the US tastes different or so our Mexican friends insist.

B&M (Boston & Maine) Baked beans in a can. They have molasses in them and everyone calls them 'Dulce'. Love seeing the Customs' people faces too when we say they're 'frijoles'!!! Not sure if they're available in your area but maybe Bush's??? It's interesting to experience how others eat their beans.

    Hope this helps.

Way to go CancunMole. I forgot about the chocolate. Any kind of Hershey bar or Reeses will do. You can probably buy in bulk at Costco or Sams, maybe even Walmart.

Same for red licorice twisties. I have brought tons of them. Matter of fact I will try to remember to bring some for two of my best girls on my next trip to FL. (That would be for Tr and Ar)

Thanks AlOT!!! That is a great start. It will be for Kids and Adults. Love the lotion idea...and the candies. I was thinking clothes, but then I have to think too hard about sizes, and I don't want to go overboard with Large and look like a fool when it's a dress on everyone. I do have pictures, but that never means anything. I did buy Hector a new camera, as I did see the prices when I was last there...yikes.
Thanks again, and if you think of anything else, please pass it on.
