i desperatedly need to hear from americans living in cancun. i am a licienced professional counselor in the US and have a friend living and working in cancun who has become depressed and attempted suicide. my brother got to her in time, but this was not a cry for help. had he not gotten there she would have died. i need your help in learning what services are available for her. Especially whether or not there any good reputable american psychotherapists and psychiatrists practicing in the area.(the real deal not the "crystals and aura's" set) needless to say i know nothing about the mental health system in MX but can't imagine it being great (ours certainly isn't in the US) and since she is american tho has lived there many years, i would think the cultural differences based on her background would make the mental health system less an option for her. as you can imagine, time is very important here. any and all help appreciated and thank you in advance for your help. I don't know of any Americans or Canadians working in the field, and I have only found one in town who speaks English (and yes, I have been looking). He specializes in cognitive behaviour therapy, not sure if that is what your friend needs or not. The options are wider if they are able to go to a Spanish speaking therapist. I wish you and your friend all the best in this difficult time.
This may be worth a closer look: http://www.hospitalgalenia.com/English/Medical_Services/Specialities.html Wishing you the best.
Sorry to hear of your friends depression. I am a qualified counsellour from the UK but am away right now. Your friend can send a private message via this board if you think it may be of help. Tracey x
