Just joined today so 'big hello' to all! My GP has warned me about a new virus going around in Mexico. Does anyone have any updates or advice? Was told to be careful with water and foods such as fresh salads that may have been run through tap water?
UK tourists warned over travel to Mexico after dozens of holidaymakers are struck down with food poisoning at luxurious hotels there http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/t...g-luxurious-Mexican-resort.html#ixzz4GOm9fELt T
Most hotels have their own water filtration systems in the tourist zones. Apparently it's bad for business to give paying customers the shits. As with any service based industry their is a risk that employees may pass things along due to poor hygiene I guess. Perhaps your GP was thinking of the Zika virus, which shouldn't be an issue unless you are, or want to get, pregnant. If not then a mild flu is about as bad as it will get. I don't think Zika is a hug risk in Cancun. It's common for about 20-30% of all travelers to get either stomach or respiratory infections unfortunately, the only real way to avoid the possibility is to stay home. Sadly if a few people get sick and hear of others at the same time they figure it's some problem with the resort and try to escalate it into something it's not. large groups of people from various locations congregating in a central location is a petri dish of potential illnesses and viruses. Use the usual precautions, bring a disinfectant spray for parts of the room you touch most and the A/C, use disinfecting wipes on the plane etc., wash your hands often and try not to touch your face
Welcome bibusty. You can check a web site fit for travel which give info on immunizations and other travel info. It does list the to viruses in Mexico at the moment.
