Help me figure this one out!

My niece doesn't call me Aunt in public; instead she gave me a nickname, AV (for Aunt Val). So when she had a baby last fall, she is going to teach him to eventually call me GAV - for Great Aunt Val.

But then we were trying to figure out -- is it Great Aunt or Grand Aunt?
When you consider that you go from mother to grandmother, it would make sense to go from aunt to grand aunt. But everyone refers to this relation as great aunt. I've even seen it in books, on TV, etc.

What's your take on this silly discussion?!?

have never heard the term grand-aunt used within my extended family or elsewhere. I prefer the term great-aunt.

I don't use either one. They're all just "Aunt" to me regardless.

Grand implies rather large or imposing so it's not a title I would like. Great implies superb or way better than most so I would opt for that.
As for the forty something - I refused to use the "F" word so I was thirty ten, thirty eleven etc. That means you get to be a teenager again and can do whatever you want.

Hi Michael F - I've been incredibly busy with promotion at work and friends and family visiting us thoughout the year here in the states. We hadn't been to cancun for 12 months until end of June this year so I drifted out of the scene. Good to be back and nice to be remebered but I'm trying to work out how the forum has changed. There's a lot more choice but it's more difficult to follow threads. I'll work it out eventually but I might be a little slow.
