A recent visitor to Isla was telling me that the policia are getting aggressive with giving tickets to people who are drinking while driving a golf cart. This sounded hard to believe, but wanted to make sure that I was not a victim.

hmmm sounds like a business opportunity. Buy a trailer that you can outfit with a few seats and a bar and do drinking tours around the island lol!

We actually heard of that too. We have a big group going to the Isla in September and we did get a little worried about that.

That sucks. We were planning to go there this year for the first time. May have to rule this out.

Slow down, as it may just be a rumor. The Isla seems very tourist friendly, and I will be surprised if this is true. I am sure that the four of us were all drinking on our Isla golf cart ride a couple of years ago.

From previous experience I wouldn't recommend drinking while driving a golf cart around the island.
Last year we bought a six pack and hired a buggy for the day.
The amount of bloody speed reduction ramps made me spill almost every drop, and I nearly lost a tooth. :daveandmo:

Earlier this Month when my Husband and I were in Cancun with our kiddos, we told our two teens to head over to the Isle of Mujeres and a rent golf cart to keep them busy while their Dad and I were super irresponsible and abandoned them to go on the Boobs Cruise. :flash: We didn't worry about them drinking since they are 16 and 17 and we figured they would be carded (haha....yea...right). They were a little nervous of the unknown and doing something like that on their own but I encourage my kids to be independent whenever I can.

Little did I know, you actually have to be 18 to rent the golf carts. Despite that, they rented them without any problems and didn't have to show ID. They also successfully bought cigars and beer (and were offered Tequilla which they did not take because they said it smelled terrible...haha....good boys). Anyway so essentially my 16 year old was over there drinking and driving a golf cart. (What happens in Mexico, stays in Mexico right? Oy vey!)

They had no issues almost the entire day but at the very end, they did indeed get pulled over by the police. They were kinda scared shitless. They got in trouble for not being 18 and were instructed to return the cart immediately. No issues with the drinking part although I am not quite sure if they actually had bottles on them at that point. I think the police quickly figured out that they didn't have any money and therefore couldn't shake them down for any. So they didn't ticket them for anything.

It all worked out but I felt even more irresponsible for not checking into the age limit thing. Oops. My bad. Meanwhile on the other side of the island their Mom was getting buck wild. :flash::3some::daveandmo::headbanger:

I went to a wedding there a few years ago and the groom ended up in jail 2 nights before his wedding. I would not chance it.
