3 flat mates go to buy a microwave... They all put in £10 each to buy one for £30... They go to the shop and buy one for the £30, when they have just left the store, the Manager tells the salesman that the microwave was in the sale and was only £25... He sends the salesman after the 3 friends with the £5 that was left.... as the salesman reaches the 3 friends he realises that he can't devide £5 between 3.. so he gives them £1 each and puts the remaining £2 in the charity box.... This means that the 3 friends have got £1 back and they have now only spent £9 each.... 3 x £9 is £27..... + the £2 in the charity box = £29... Where has the other £1 gone ???? :? :bash: Daz.
Oh God, someone answer this quick. I've heard ths before and cannot remember the answer, and it's gonna bug me!
I think its how you look at it and the supposed missing £1 does not actually exist. Microwave £25 Charity Box £ 2 3x£1 Refund £ 3 Total = Original £30
I know but he gave 5 pounds back, 3 for each person and two in the charity box. So each person paid 10 pounds and got one back meaning they paid 9. 27 pounds, 3 pounds left - so where is the other pound? Stupid keyboard, hasn't got a pound sign!
But in the end they havent given £10 each, they've only given £9 each, add the two to the charity box and that makes £29. Ian
Believe me, you won't solve that one by multiplying. GF has been at it all morning, digging all math books. I even had to show her the quadratic equation and refresh the square root. All quiet on the Vegas front. I will need so quiet time this week, anyone has another one somewhere?
Hmmmm, I'm, sure we would all agree that the £27 doesn't include the quid that each got back. And the £2 that went into the charity box doesnt' include the quid that each got back So when we finally add the £3 they got back, it would come to a total of £27+ £2+ £3 = 32 quid. Where did the extra £2 come from?
If they've all put £10 in then there would be a spare £1 but they havent have they. Because they all got a £1 refund it means they've only put £9 in so the total contribution is £27 and not the £30 that three lots of £10multiply too.... So... 3 X £9 = £27 Minus £25 for microwave = £2 £2 to the charity box Balance = £0 Ian
What are you adding 2 on for. 9 x 3 = £27 Subtract the £25 for the microwave Leaves £2 that goes in the charity box. Can I go to bed now
