I was flicking through the channels on the TV last week, and there was an advert for a programme on MTV called 'Geordie Shore: Chaos in Cancun'. Apparently it is a take on Jersey Shore, with people from Newcastle (UK), whereby a load of drunked-up twenty-somethings misbehave and say outrageous stuff. I've never viewed either shows. This new season is set in Cancun (hot and sunny) over Newcastle (wet and cold). First thing that struck me was that the advert was 'faked'. It showed 'the cast' walking up a white sandy beach (presumably meant to be Cancun), with a clear blue ocean on the right-hand-side of the screen. This all looked relatively fine, but there was a huge mountain in the background (north of HZ in Cancun), which unless has sprouted out of the ocean in the last seven months, doesn't exist! I love Cancun, and love seeing pictures of it, hearing about it etc. I even watch the dull nature shows about the Caribbean because it sometimes features the Mexican side of the Caribbean coast. Curiousity got the better of me and I attempted to watch the first episode of this MTV show, to see what it had to say about Cancun. What can I say? First of all I had to turn the TV to mute and put subtitles on because the sketchy gimmicky music mixed with the silly conversations made my skin crawl. Basically the show is about dull attention-seekers. They're all vying for maximum screen time, and will do anything to get it. It so far hasn't said much about Cancun. They occasionally cut to a clip of the main strip of the HZ, or show a background of the beach. They do show them in the clubs, so far The City, Bulldog and the beach one (don't know the name of). I was hoping they might show a bit about the day trips, but so far it's all about the nightlife. Apparently next episode they go on a boat cruise, so I will be watching with interest as to how other 'non-Boobs Cruise' trips go down. Talking with people in work, apparently this show is very popular with a certain kind of British teenager/twenty-something audience, which worries me. It may give them ideas that Cancun is the right destination for their next holiday! In terms of what you get in return, Cancun is a relatively cheap destination, and up to now, a bit of a hidden gem for us Brits. Majority of tourism seems to be from Canada and USA. I'm hoping this show doesn't encourage more of the undesirables away from the typical British holiday hotspots like Benidorm, Greece and Spain. That being said, if it does happen, hopefully it'll drive some competition into the prices to Cancun, and I might save a bit of money!
