Hi guys heading too Cancun next week for 11 nights staying the Rui Cancun in the Hotel Zone. The last time i was there was with the lads for spring break about 6-7 year ago and we never ventured far from the centre of the hotel zone.
This time i am looking too do more trips and shopping etc as with the girlfriend. She has heard things about not going into downtown which i've said is perfectly safe during the day if heading too Walmart etc, can anyone advise me on this??

Also i stay in Scotland and was wondering what the best way too take cash over would be.... Pounds / Dollars / Peso / Traveller Cheque??

Any info would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Barcrest,

General advice for us Europeans... Dont get screwed twice with the exchange rate/fees. So avoid an exchange like Pounds->Dollars->Pesos

Best way is to take cash straight out of the ATM (if you have modest fees for foreign withdrawels). This gives you the best rate.

Otherwise take pounds with you and exchange them there at a Bank directly to Pesos.

Downtown is fine to go to, to get to Walmart just stand on the Ocean side of the road and look for a bus that says 'Walmart' on the front. Market 28 is also fine to go to.

Not sure where you are from in Scotland, but if from a city then you'll find it safer in Cancun than at home most probably. (I'm from Nottingham and it's much safer in Cancun in terms of random street violence).

At night there are some great bars and clubs to visit downtown, but if you don't know where they are or where you are, it might be best to stick to the tourist bars in the party centre, until, you get to know downtown.

I'd agree with what Nic said above, my advice (since you're a Scot) would be to take Pesos. Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you'll get short changed often. Lots of Americans visit Cancun so Dollars are familiar to them, but if Dollars aren't familiar to you then use Pesos, it's the National currency of Mexico :)
