    Hello!

I'm planning to move to Cancun in May with my Mexican boyfriend. We currently live in the US. Just wondering if anyone can help me on what type of visa I should get. Since I am a flight attendant and will be traveling in and out of Cancun at least 2x a month, so, not sure if a tourist visa will work for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm no expert, but I see a potential problem for you. First, a tourist visa will work for a while, maybe forever, not sure. The problem is, if you apply for an FM3, which is what I think you need, you surrender your tourist visa and will be stuck here for the duration of the process. That can be 2 months or more.

I agree with Bruce about this, you can come and go, visa free, forever (unless they change the law). You just can't stay for more than 180 consecutive days; but, with your work, that won't happen anyway!

There would have to be a pretty strong reason to want to get involved in that cumbersome residence permit process Bruce referred to.

Thanks so much for the help. I think I'm gonna make an appointment with the Mexican Consulate here in Chicago. I will let you know what they tell me!

You would think that considering the international nature of the airline industry you could get some advice of that type from your employer? Unless you are changing jobs as well?

OK, Americans can come and go visa free, and stay up to 180 days at a time; but, have you considered your Mexican boyfriend? You mentioned that he lives in the U.S. What is his immigration status there? (If he has Permanent Residence status there, but moves to Mexico to live, it raises complications with U.S. Law which you may not have considered.)

Also, when I first came to Mexico, with the tourist visa you could stay here up to 180 days at a time, and no more than six months total in a year. Is this still the case? (That was 6 years ago)

No Laura that must have changed as I was here for a year and a half on a Tourist Visa from Oct 2009-Jan 2011 before getting my FM3. In that time I did leave MX 3 times. No questions. But since she comes and goes with her job there is no problem. My friend is a Flight Attendant that has a bf here. She has been coming and going on a Tourist Visa for about 8 yrs.

Nothing's changed, and I've never seen any kind of limitations on the coming and going of those nationalities that have permission to enter Mexico, visa free (bear in mind, Americans and many other nationailities can enter Mexico without a visa of any kind, simply being admitted upon proof of their nationality).

When I first arrived, I was under the impression there was a limitation- such as G. was speaking of- but I could never find it, and people's experiences, like that of ToriB, were otherwise.
