A friend of mine and I will be traveling to Cancun for the first time later this month. I have a lot of questions and have been trying to get up-to-date info, particularly about where we are staying, on the forum, but am having difficulty; so if figured I would try asking questions as I found the DR1 forum very useful before my first trip to the Dominican Republic.

Here are some of my questions (I say some because I am sure I will come up with more :) ).
    1. My Spanish is limited, although I bought Rosetta Stone to try to learn, and my friend's is nonexistent except for "Hola" and "casa". Will we be at a loss or will my limited Spanish be able to get us by?
    2. I have read mixed feelings about using US$ versus pesos. Is it a good idea to have both on hand (in smaller denominations)? I have found when traveling to other countries in the carribbean that everyone is happy to get the US$. Please let me know what is best.
    3. Can anyone tell me about Club Internacionale de Cancun?
    4. I have read some reviews about the WalMart in Cancun. Will that be the place to go for groceries, etc.?
    5. Since I will be on vacation, I really don't want to spend my time in the kitchen. Breakfast is fine, but I want to be out and about the rest of the time exploring. Can anyone give me an idea of what meals will cost? We are both on modest budgets and absolutely love to try local places as opposed to chains.
    6. I have seen the ads throughout this website for Entertainment Plus. I would like to get the 2 for 1 card and book at least one tour. Any comments on their service?
Thanks for reading through this novel and I look forward to any and all help.

    Hannah

I can answer some of your questions based off of my expieriences.

    1. I am about as limited as you are in the Spanish Department. I stayed downtown for 18 days this past March pretty much by myself, as my boyfriend was working alot, and had no problems at all. If you are at a place like Wal Mart and the cashier starts talking to you, they can kind of pick up the fact you are clueless.

    2. Most places except both currencies. I had both denominations on me, but I spent alot of time downtown, so I found using Pesos was getting me more bang per buck and you will more likely get Pesos back if you use US $ to purchase something. The exchange rate is great, so I highly recommend it.

    3. I have nothing to offer.

    4. The Boyfriend lived a couple blocks from Walmart, so lets just say, it was on my daily to do list. I thought the prices were very decent, and the selection was really good too. It's right on the bus route to and from the HZ, so that is another reason most tourists use it.

    5. It really all depends on where you are going to be eating. Things in the HZ of course cost alot more then if you go downtown. But eating on a budget is very easy. I do have to mention that my favorite Taco place in the HZ is Taco Factory. Someone else will have to give you prices. I don't remember that.

    6. I have nothing to offer again.

Have fun. I am very jelous!!!!

    Tori,

Thanks for the help; I really appreciate it. Sorry you're jealous. Is your boyfriend still there? If so, you should head down again. :D

    I hope I helped some.
I wish he was still there. He is in Ontario right now working. But a piece of me wants him to go back to Mexico, preferably Cancun. I miss all my friends there, but I know he's making a better life for us in Canada. I was all set to move there mid May, but he found an opportunity and had to take it. I may go down soon to see everyone, but in the meantime, enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes for me.
