Hey all, love the forum and we're headed to Temptations this Saturday. Claude had a tooth ache pop up tonight and figure it was fortuitous that were headed to Mexico! Anyone have a suggestion for a local dentist in Cancun? Thanks in advance! XOXO Bae
Steve is probably the only one who can answer your question. Just prepare to pay cash ahead of any services.
There is a walk-in clinic with dentist and medical across the street. We had a pretty serious dental issue on our first night of a 10 day trip. Wife broke off half of front tooth. Imagine that to go along with first day curse. Ha Anyhow, because cracked split up into gums, it required a root canal to start. 6 appts later. Including micro surgery and several temporary crowns. The surgery and root canal were done by specialists they brought in... We paid total of 900$ out the door a third of what we would have paid for same in US. We hoped to get the permanent crown but didn’t because of swelling still from surgery... but want to give that dental office and Dr. Diana major kudos!! Very accommodating. Understood our vaca situation and always got Leah in early and she cared a lot about temp matching other teeth as best possible. Once we returned home our regular Dentist felt they did a great job and very thorough! Sending home all x-rays and notes with us.... anyhow believe it or not it turned out to be one of our most fun of our 9 trips to Temptation for all the other reasons obviously. Lol
I've got first-hand experience with this, and love the care I've received at Ocean Dental, although I think they have changed the name to Cancun Dental Specialist, as indicated in a post above. Either way, they're GREAT! Here are the details... The place is owned and operated by Dr. Irma Gavaldon. She's a very wonderful and very professional lady, and she has put together an excellent staff of other dentists and specialists. You may wonder her qualifications. She was educated in Mexico, but also the states at the University of Michigan dental school, and actually is on the board of the U of M dental school. That speaks to her professionalism and skill. If you email her, sometimes she'll use an email that has a UM.edu extension, which is through the university. She actually had, (and perhaps still has) two practices here in Michigan. However, I always see her in Cancun. The office location is on the main tourist hotel zone strip, and very close to Bubba Gump Shrimp, and in a small shopping plaza. It's extremely easy to get to, and they'll both pick you up, and drop you off at your hotel. They make it easy. Now for the office. VERY modern in layout and very well equipped. It's honestly the most well equipped dentist office I've ever been too, not that I really know modern dental tools, but it's obvious Dr. Irma runs a tight ship! Everything is CLEAN, and neat. Just what you want in a health care setting. Now for the office visit. I usually try for a 1st thing in the morning appointment. That might still be 9.30am. The ONLY drawback to the place is they still run a bit on Mexican time, and there isn't much rush. It doesn't take long for things to get a bit backed up, and the entire client base seems to be Americans and Canadians in the waiting room. They do practically every bit of work on site, and if you need a crown or something special, they may ask you to come back in a day or so for the final cap. Everything else is done pretty much immediately, and with a dentist doing even the simple work, even cleanings. They don't hand any of the work off to assistants. Billing is obviously a HELL of a lot less painful. I usually just pay them cash, (although they almost certainly take plastic) and the process if almost unbelievable. I always want to pay before I leave, just to make sure I took care of them, but it seems almost secondary to them. Somehow getting paid seems to be the least concern they have, unlike in the states where before they ask what your problem is they've collected your insurance card and bank info. Anyway, I LOVE the place and Dr. Irma. If you want to see what the office is like, you can go to Google Maps and actually do a walk through of the office inside the building! The only drawback is, friends and family at home will no doubt kid you about visiting a Mexican dentist. At this point whenever we head south I just tell them I've got a dental appointment again, and they know we're off to Mexico. I tell them I enjoy petting the goats and chickens that wander through the office, and they just roll their eyes, half believing it's true. Hope that helps!
