My wife and I will be in Cancun 2nd week of November. Do you have any favorate restaurants that are "musts" when you were in Cancun?? Looking for both in town and the hotel zone. Any suggestions??
If you are into steaks, I would definitely recommend Puerto Madero and or Cambalache in the Hotel Zone and Bandoneon downtown. There are so many good dining options but it really depends on what you are looking for, if you want cheap out of the way places where you would rarely see a tourist, seafood, Mexican, Itatlian or whatever. Fish and shrimp tacos in a dive are part of my routine as is food you probably have never heard of but is wonderful and does not involve eating anything made of parts of the head or stomach. You can eat dinner for $100 US or more for two or you can have a local joint without a big sacrifice in quality and do it for $30 US, like at Super Carnes (meats) for their Arrachera special. This is like a skirt steak, marinated, tasty, tender and cooked to perfection. This is an R-2 bus ride from the HZ and a block from the Walmart bus stop. You could also try what we call "street meat", best after midnight, on the corner outside La Taberna, a downtown sports bar on Av. Yaxchilan. Select your choice of meat, then add the salsa that goes from mild to kick ass hot. Feel free to send a PM if you have more specific questions, how to get there, etc. Have you ever heard of Pozole? Yummy in November. Tortas Ahugadas with the best margarita in all of Cancun, al Los Guanatos at the bullring for about $4 US each. At the bullring there is sort of a plaza around the outside edge with several places to eat and drink. Avoid Wed night as that is after the bullfights and sometimes there is the odor of, pardon me, BS.
la Parilla for my birthday We will be dining at la Parilla for the first time this year. Always wanted to try it. Every year we have to have Civeche at el Cajas in Market 28. Anyone have any other favorites for Civeche? 8 more days :happy birthday: Jimmy
Jimmy, Do you mean "El Cejas"? Tranlates to "The Eyebrows" if you can remember their logo. The original owner's nickname, for obvious reasons, was called Cejas. A lot of odd nicknames in this culture. A guy down the street from me has a little walk up convenience store and is what we would call a big guy. He has a name but i don't think it is Gordo, which everyone calls him. El Cejas is an institution. Years ago they had one on Yaxchilan but closed it after a bit. They have been at M 28 as long as I can remember.
Carillos has always held a special place in my heart, one of the first places Perry & ever ate in Cancun.
El Pescador in downtown Cancun. Really, this is a great place with absoulute awesome food; especially seafood. The soups are fantastic, the salads crisp and the main courses are good. Service is outstanding for a small establishment. I am not sure but think this place has been around for quite a long time. Prices are moderate.
