That are steps needed to take for a Mexican citizen to obtain visa to visit United States.
Is it difficult? What is the maximum length of visit? Does sponsorship help or needed?
    Thanks in advance for info.

You need to make an appointment with the US Consulate in Merida (4 hours west of Cancun).

Here are their list of steps:
How To Apply | Consulate General of the United States Merida, Mexico

It may require 2 separate visits to Merida.

For your interview, make sure to take as many documents as possible showing your employment, financial situation, reason for traveling, etc.

The process is not difficult, but it's not guaranteed that they will give you a visa. However, in the past year or so the US Consulates have been much more generous about giving out tourist visas.

I don't remember the maximum length of visit, but sponsorship is not required.

    Good luck!

I think I was told that you can make an appointment online, then go, with all the required docs. If approved you know on the spot. A friend of mine did this a couple of years ago and came back with Visas for her and 2 children. The father met them there and everything was in order.

TJ - You can still make your appointment online, but you have to make 2 separate appointments now:

1 to get pictures and fingerprints taken at a separate office in Merida

Another to have your interview at the embassy, where they tell you yes or no (on the spot, as you said)

This is a change made in the last year or 2, I think.

    Gringation is right.

You need two appointments, usually requiring a night's stay in Merida. And, yes you will need to go to two different offices.

The appointments can be made online after you have filled out all the forms etc.

Thanks Laura and Mat. Make that Consulate though, not Embassy. Good to know this stuff. As if it will even involve me. Jaja
