Tom: Awesome pictures!! I have a quick question: Did you come across any snakes/reptiles at all? I'm a "hobby-herpetologist" and I have been starved when it comes to snakes since arriving to Cancun (only 3 finds so far ) and would LOVE to get tips regarding snakes/reptiles around here. I record their length, their patterns, count some scales and take some quick photos which I end up selling later Any tips are welcomed!
RG: Are they "decent" sized (like approx 50 cm +) ? I know it might be hard to tell, but at a glance, do they look to be minimum around half a meter? I have seen several in our park(across the street from Plaza Nayandei) but they are tiny things and I consider them "worms" :? I have had the pleasure of running into a approx 90 cm Boa Constrictor, just when we arrived here in April-07 and one yet unidentified 1.5 meter long and slender brown colored snake(slender as in the width of a regular banana) I have heard about Puerto Morelos and the jungle out there, but havent been yet...
Snakes! Our friend Al works at a new resort complex that is under construction out by the car ferry dock,. The one to and from Isla Mujeres. Friday they caught a boa that was over 3 meters long.
Rawkus - I saw one that was the entire width of the path there, so that's maybe 6 feet long. I've seen many that were at least 3 feet long, that's probably the average size I've seen there. I saw one that was bright yellow, it's was little though. And another one was bright green, it was hanging from a palapa in the park, it was little too, but it was my favorite one so far. You won't see them when the park is full of people, but if you go there on off-peak hours they aren't uncommon.
Tom: NOW were talking!! Beautiful creatures RG: What time would be best you reckon? Snakes(and other reppies) are easiest to catch and spot early morning before they heat up and go hunting... I'm not sure when the park opens..? I'm def going though, since you're observations give me hope, ha ha Thank you both!
Well the park is busiest from 7:30 am to about 9 am I think. It opens at 6 am. So maybe you should go right at 6. When I go it's always in the 9 to 12 time slot.
We have seen a HUGE boa at club casablanca on Bonampak- no kidding. Also in the same pot a small coral snake- truly beautiful. Tracey
