    Now that I'm digging into the human psyche....

    You are an international soccer player and the captain of a small team competing to qualify for the soccer world cup. Nobody expects you to qualify, but after 6 months of qualification rounds, you have somehow managed to win through to the final round of qualifications. If you win this last game you will qualify for the largest sporting event in the world. It is a huge deal to qualify as it means that all those in your team can focus solely on their soccer and will have a chance to improve their games. They will also be playing in front of the world and if they do well some of the big clubs could sign them, not to mention just the money you will get from making it into the tournament. You and your team mates have done it tough and had to work extremely hard to get to this position. You don't get sponsorships like the big team, you have paid your own way to get to this position.

    The problem is you are playing against the best team in the world. They haven't lost in 35 games and bookies are taking odds on not whether you lose, but how much you will lose by. Some bookies are giving you a 10 goal headstart.

    If you lose this match, you will not be going to the world cup, however if you win, you will recieve fame and glory, not to mention that you will probably not have to work another day in your life, you can live the dream of playing soccer full time.

    The night before the big match, you get a phone call. It is from a bookmaker who says he has a once in a lifetime proposition for you. He says that he has arranged with the opposition team that they will let you win. He says that this match means nothing to them, as they are assured a spot in the world cup anyway because of their world ranking, and are considering resting some key players. He said that a number of the players in the team want to throw the match as they would like to bet against the team as the odds being offered are very generous. He says that they want to make it look convincing so late in the first half they are going to substitute on a player who will make a deliberate foul on one of your players and hopefully get him sent off. They want that player to be you.

    He says he doesn't want anyone else in the team to know about it, and if you agree it would mean that you have a gauranteed spot in the world cup. He says to think about it overnight and he'll call in the morning to find out your decision.

    You toss and turn all night, thinking about the consequences. If you agree, you will get to live your dream, but you feel guilty that it hasn't come the way you have hoped. You try to tell yourself tho, that this levels the playing field, that you don't have it as good as the other teams and players and that this is the one way to get your opportunity of a lifetime.

    On the other hand, you don't know how you would feel about getting into the world cup this way. You don't know if this would cheapen the experience. There's also the fact that if anyone ever found out you would be in complete and utter disgrace.

    The next morning you wait by the phone. At around 10am it calls. You pick it up and it's the bookie. He wants to know your decision.

    How do you reply?

    I'm an honest person...I would stay with the underdog team. Win or lose.

    Think of your team... the exposure and financial opportunities you'll be denying them of because of your own morals self guilt. That's what I call selfish :D

    We did not work that hard to cheat our way in. No way. No how. Your moral compass seems to be completely smashed Waste.

    selfish????? ... you might as well tell me I'm selfish for not robbing a bank to give money to the poor.

    And I think we're forgetting the fact that it's illegal to fix an sports match. Imagine the shame of getting caught and having all your team's hard work wasted because you were actually the selfish one that wanted to make a few bucks by cheating.

    Next time we're in Cancun together and you're team captain... don't pick me. I want a captain who will do whatever it takes to win! One can never have enough TShirts!

    And my moral compass is not smashed... I'm in Canada... This far north, there's a slightly bigger difference between true north and magnetic north...

    edit: Forgot you guys were in TO, sorry... Montreal is still further north... :D

    If you're talking a game called ANYTHING GOES then really would it be cheating???... duh.

    and FYI.... the difference between True North and Magnetic north is actually closer for you being further North than we are. The difference is widest at the equator

    correction.... it actually makes a difference on where you are in the world..... True and Mag could be in the same line if you're standing in the right spot.

    the declination setting for Montreal and toronto is about 12 West.... so really there is no difference.. *L*

    From my 5 minutes of research, I disagree. Here's my logic...

    X = True North
    M = Magnetic North
    S = Steve
    W = Me

    -------------------------------

    M.........................X

    ...................W

    ....................S

    -----------------------------------------

    I know it's exagerated, but it's just to prove the point. The further south you are, the less degress there is between X and M.

    ...also, found this...

    "The Canadian government has made several measurements since, which show that the North Magnetic Pole is continually moving northwest. In 1996 an expedition certified its location by magnetometer and theodolite at 78°35.7′N, 104°11.9′W. Its estimated 2005 position was 82.7° N 114.4° W, to the west of Ellesmere Island, the biggest of the Queen Elizabeth Islands, in Canada [10]. During the 20th century it has moved 1100 km, and since 1970 its rate of motion has accelerated from 9 km/year to 41 km/year (2001-2003 average; see also Polar drift). If it maintains its present speed and direction it will reach Siberia in about 50 years, but it is expected to veer from its present course and slow down."

    at 41km a year, I still have room to sway a bit... :shock:
