What kind of medical help is available at the resort? In the past, we ahve had to deal with various minor stuff at other resorts.
My friend fell and cut his foot when we were there. The front desk called a physician that cleaned it out. It was pretty expensive (and honestly unnecessary), but there is someone available if needed. He had to pay cash btw.
I have read a few reports of them wanted huge deposits before them treating you at the hospital, ( one of them was a mild heart attack ) . I don't know at what point, that they treat you first and then collect.??? Even though you may have travel insurance, they want to be paid up front. My policy says I have to call before seeking non-life threatening treatments . Always good to read the fine print. Personally I like to have a lot available on a credit card in foreign countries to pre pay for medical emergencies.
Reg had to go the hospital once. $100 cash to get the Doc to come to the resort. Cab to the hospital for food/ecoli/bacterial poisoning. He wanted to die he was so violently ill. They wanted our insurance upon checkin. I was shitting my pants I was so nervous about his treatment in a 3rd world country. It was great! Individually prepackaged implements etc. No worries. The hospitien has a wing for tourists and a wing for residents obviously. Only problem? My insurance company gave me the wrong toll free number to call back in Canada. SOOOO when the hospitien tried to get in touch with them to collect no $$$ so we had to pay with our credit card. Luckily we had enough availability on our credit card otherwise we would be up shit creek. Kept all receipts and our travel insurance company TIC came through no problem when we got home. We paid $25 for our medical insurance. Our bill was over $800 for the hospital. Needless to say...GREAT INVESTMENT BUY INSURANCE!
My wife feel and broke her hand at TTR last Dec (2012). The resort did have a Medical Tech who placed one of those inflatable splints on it. We met TTRs Doctor on Call at Amerimed Hospital. We assumed from the name "Amerimed" that they had "something" to do with America. WRONG!!! Caught all kind of grief on Trip Advisor for my nationalist assumptions. LORD !!! They would not accept my wife's United Healthcare insurance. Caught all sorts of grief on TA for assuming that the whole world accepts United Healthcare. The Doctor told us he didn't need an XRAY to tell it was broken !! (Badges, Badges, we don't need no damn badges). MY wife said "I want to go home!!!". Delta was the Hero of the story!!! We immediately went to the airport and Delta has us on the next flight to Atlanta.. Greatest lesson learned is NOT to make a big deal to any airline about how much pain you are in or they won't let you board. They don't want a medical emergency at 30,000 ft. The "experts" on TA assured us that "everyone was aware of that" When we were leaving Amerimed there were 3 police trucks with 8+ policeman with Uzis covering 5 men laying down in the Street. My wife asked the taxi driver what crime those men had committed. he replied "They did not pay their hospital bill"!!! She did laugh at that. Like a previous poster stated , take a credit card with at least $5000 in available money. Most insurance companies reimburse you, not pay the bill directly !!
