Is it legal to specify a narrow age range for employees like that? That would be illegal in the US I think. Sure does make me feel like people here don't appreciate experience.
Just look at the employment ads in the local papers. They specify height and weight limits, age brackets, etc, etc. There doesn't appear to be any anti-discrimination statutes in effect. And while I fully support the right of a person to seek work regardless of age, sex, appearance, etc, after stepping off a plane yesterday that featured a 60ish flight attendent who refused to make coffee, barely fit in the aisle and who bashed me in the elbow each time she walked past, one has to wonder. (Excuse me while I put on my body armor).
It certainly is legal! That's why people in their 40s and up I've known panic even MORE than one would in the US when they lose their job. I especially like it when they specify married or single. That's why I'm hoping to either open my own business or have an established freelance/consultant business going when I move back down there...perhaps I need to find a new field to make that financially feasible? Oh Mixz1....I'm sure that particular person was just as annoying a few decades ago as she was on your flight!
We do appreciate experience, indeed. If you want to apply and you are the right person, of course we are going to give you the opportunity to demonstrate all your skills, and we'd love to work together.
The company I work for here has strict policies about discrimination, they hire regardless of age, gender, etc, they are also have on going training to suit your needs, will pay for your medicine if you want to stop smoking. I was going to do private Spanish classes and they were prepared to pay half for me, and they will always try to move staff around if they are not happy in their current department, rather than let them go. Don't get me wrong, compared to the UK it still sucks with regards to vacation time, benefits, workers rights etc, but for Mexico they are light years ahead!
Um, guys, just because the help wanted ads in the papers all reflect the same pattern of discrimination does not mean it's legal in Mexico!! Haven't you noticed the incredible lack of enforcement of laws here? Mexico has a great many laws on the books, good laws even, which never, ever stand a chance of being enforced...and employers know that. I don't buy the "they do it so it must be legal" argument, that doesn't mean it's not legal but the fact that people do it is not proof. When I see an ad with age discrimination in it I'm turned off. Even if that company would be happy to interview and hire me I'm uncomfortable with working for a place that appears to value youth more than experience.
I do not know what the law is in Mexico re posting ads with ages, sex, height etc. I do not know if a company would interview one person over 35 when qualified or not if the advertising is for someone under 35. But even if they do, based on the description of this job as well as others here by the Marketing 4 Sunset Group specifically naming ages, etc. I truly feel that anyone over the age that was advertised, will not be truly considered for such a job. Shame that this sort of discrimination exists in Mexico and in a different way in the USA as well.
Do a little research on the company offering the job. They are advertising for hostess’s/models in the paper all the time to fill OPC positions. Rather sad.
