I will finally be on my way by the end of February (depending on when I can retrieve my French passport), driving. Would you know anyone interested in coming with me, in my car on in caravan? Besides, any advice is welcome. I will be leaving Mexico as a Mexican (if it is my best interest), and arriving to the US as a Canadian, although I don't think I will ever bring the car back. My car is Mexican. Thanks
If you're looking for places to visit on the way up, here is a link to a trip the boys (15 and 13) and I did last August (QR to Texas) QRoo to California - Playa del Carmen & Riviera Maya Forum by In The Roo
Thanks, Kathy, your report is great. I am not going on vacation, so I planned to go there as fast as I could (never at night of course and I am not an early person), but to stay 2 days in New-Orleans. The car will be full to the top (what as they looking for at the customs?). No rum, I am not good at driving when I am drunk :icon_mrgreen. However your photos are so amazing, that I can stop once in a while to take some (If I can charge the batteries in hotels, my camera is always super-hungry). I hope I won't do it alone, but I am sure (if I am not attacked by some banditos) that I will not regret it.
Jen, Why don't you ship your car by boat. www.hydeshipping.com goes from Pto. Morelos to Port Everglades which is 10 minutes from Ft. Lauderdale airport. Watch www.spiritair.com for their $9 rates, r/t purchase required and subject to about $100 in taxes and fees. Impossible to beat their fares to Florida. It is quite inexpensive when you figure gas, hotels, risk of problems on what amounts to a 2,500 or so mile trip. You can then hop a plane to the Big Easy for your Bourbon Street experience and Cafe du Monde for some hot out of the fryer beignets. Yummy.
I know, T.J., I have considered it, I called them (although they never sent me the quotation). I am aware of the cost, the risks, the energy... I would be delighted to go to Fort Lauderdale once again, I love it, and enjoy the cafes, crepes and other nice things, although my destination is the West coast. But they want the car empty, I am going there to live, so I need a lot of "first necessity" stuff, when (NO "IF") I get my visa the rest will follow, it can be a long time. What would I do with a small luggage? I have never been able to get the $9 fare with Spirit, because I live out of the US (or that's what they claim). As you know much better than I, their system is not very reliable. I receive their promotions all the time.... and they don't accept my ID/password when I try to login (and I am unable to change ). I gave up, I buy the normal fares and I got a better one to Tampa with Jetblue in July.
I doubt I will be going back that early, as I have a tentative date to fish in the Keys toward the end of April. But I have made the trip to Florida, a dozen times, and if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me. My house is 83 miles north of Ft. Lauderdale, if that helps.
