No, I have not been arrrested nor am I in trouble. I was away yesterday as a few of you may have noticed. My mothers brother, my uncle was diagnosed with cancer. It is in his liver and his lymphnodes(spelling?) They started his first round of chemotherapy yesterday so we were all there. As I later found out, he must have a bone marrow transplant in order to save his life. The doctor told us that my mother or myself would likely be the best donors or matches. I have to go in for a bone marrow biopsy later this week or early next week to determine if myself or my mother are matches. If we both are, I will be the one to donate since I am in far better health than my mother. If I do........I will likely be in the hospital for up to a month or more, and then recover at home after that. I will keep you all posted as to what happens, but I wanted to let you all know incase I do decide to donate my bone marrow to my uncle if I am a match! Thanks guys, hope all is well!

    Jason,

That's a very unselfish, generous thing for you to do.

(I was tested for a bone marrow transplant for my best friend, she had leukemia.
Sadly, I wasn't a match, neither were her brothers or father, and no match was found,
    and she passed away.)

    Please keep us posted.

I will keep your uncle and YOU in my prayers.

Best wishes and I hope he finds a match. Keep your hopes up. Just remember, most donors are out within a week. My uncle was out in 3 days after donating marrow for my mother.

    Jason,

Talk to your uncle's doctor. Depending on how much time you have, you can donate blood that they will keep on reserve for you and feed back to you after you complete your marrow donation. We were told it helps with recovery time.

My uncle checked in on a Monday morning. Transplant was later that day. Tuesday night he wanted to leave. Wednesday morning he was checked out. He took the Thursday off and was back at work Friday. He was a race horse trainer and jockey, it's not like he sat behind a desk. If I remember correctly, it takes 3 to 6 weeks for the marrow to replace itself.

If you can't talk to the doctor right away, I'm sure you can find some info on the net. I'm sure I remember the doctor saying that most donors are released in 3 days, almost all within 5 days.

wow, thats really good news, I heard it was a lot longer and a VERY painful process. Maybe it was that for the patient receiving the bone marrow?

well, dont make me out to be a saint just yet, lol. I have to be a match first, but, if I am, yes, I will donate. Family is family, and thats nothing for me to sacrafice in order for him to live! I would imagine everyone of you would do the same!! We have a great group around here!! :)
