Unfortunately, utility companies tend to be buttholes about late/non payment in many ways. We have a law here in IL that essentially says that if you have a medical condition that requires you to have whatever utility it is, then all you need do is forward a Dr.'s letter to the utility and they cannot, by law terminate your service for non-payment.

That doesn't cover the hoards of senior citizens who are on a fixed income and simply cannot afford the rising costs of things.....so many of them have to resort to bankruptcy's just to discharge the debt and get service restored.....sad but true!

Then you have the welfare frauds who could pay SOMETHING, but choose the booze or whatever...... .and don't pay anything for months. They oftentimes will have another baby, then put the new service in the baby's name, screw up the baby's credit and the cycle repeats itself....over, and over, and over again...more babies=more service without paying for it.

Not when you sign up over the phone. All you need is a name, address and social insurance number.

Waste is totally correct......pick up the phone, give scant info & you got the hook up!

When I worked for legal aid, I had a 16 year old client who wanted to be emancipated because his biological mother had TOTALLY trashed his credit before he was even old enough to have credit. It was tough, but I managed to clear everything for him and get him a clean slate. Took a LONG time though to get all of his creditors to wipe his record clean.

It really should be a crime to do that to another person....be they 16 or 76...it should never, ever be allowed to happen!
