Advice please. We are traveling from the UK. Which is better US$ or Mexican Peso We don't want to get stung twice on commison charges !
There is no point using American dollars if you are a Brit. Why pay for exchange twice? Using the USD won't save you anything in the long run as I see it.
What if you are coming from the USA? Is there any point? I think for me I would just rather leave a 1, 5, or 10 for a tip rather then mess with converting Peso's in my head while tipsy.
Well the conversion is really simple, basically 10:1 for a quick estimate. They are happy to take USD, Canadian dollars, Pounds, Euros etc etc. Just remember that when they get tips in a foreign currency that they have to do the legwork to exchange those back into pesos to use for their day to day transactions. It's up to you, but personally I like to tip in the currency of the country I am in.
We normally use the US$ when we travel, But if you are converting it from the British lb. you could use the US$ in other countries that freely accept the currency if you have any left over.... We have a US account just for our travels and deposit any left over cash into that account.
Sometimes I'll bother with the peso to dollar conversion, today at 13.6 to 1 (US). But,, most vendors (and some resorts we have stayed at) will try to give u the old 10-1 spiel.. giving them an added quick profit. Usually you can win this one quickly since they want to make a sale. BUT,, within a day or two and we are in full 'vacation-have-fun-mode' we could give a care less and go with the flow, especially after the icy drinks are flowing..our tips are more frequent and get bigger.. and,, we have yet to regret doing so.
We took both US and Pesos and I found US money much easier to deal with. And anything we purchased outside of the resort (jet skis) was always quoted in US money anyhow. Next time I wont be bringing Pesos.
I'd have to say pesos Absolutely everytime I asked how much it was they would say the US$ price, but if you asked how many pesos they would add a zero or slightly less than adding a zero, which is about 25% cheaper if you pay in pesos So $20 cab ride was 150 to 200 pesos which is actually only $12 or $15 I'm taking pesos for sure this time
I like using pesos at the resort because a 20 peso bill holds up when wet a lot better then a couple of 1 dollar bills. Of course on inflatable beer pong days I usually give Jose or Tiger a huge tip to start the day because we wear them out on shots and beers.
