Despite having a wonderful time on our June 11-18 trip to TTR, we finally found a big negative. Our entire checking account got drained with a whole bunch of charges and ATM withdrawals in Cancun over the July 4 weekend. We used our ATM card only once, and did so only at TTR. I somewhat recall another post about this recently. Anyone else have this issue? Bottom line: Don't use the ATM at TTR.
This happened to a June junkie the 2nd week of June. He had the same problem after using the ATM at the hotel.
I've never felt comfortable using the ATM machine there (not even sure about having my credit card run in the gift shop actually)... If anyone ever needs to use an ATM there's a major bank ATM attached to the small convenience store just outside TTR to the left (looking at the street). If I recall you can either get dollars or pesos as well.
I heard about this happening to someone else a week or so back, I reported it to the hotel for them to look into. Also reported it back in April when it happened before. I did get a reply back thanking me for reporting it with a very generic reply that was sent to a previous guest who had a similar misfortune.
We have had this happen twice in the U.S. We were told by the bank that the crooks insert a very thin card reader into the slot so that when you insert your card, the ATM works fine, but the reader records your data. Some of them can even be accessed remotely. We were advised to avoid using ATM's that are in a location where they are not being recorded 24/7. When traveling internationally, we try not to use ATM'S but if we have to, we go to a bank. This has nothing to do with the retailer where the machine is located. It is simply a vulnerability of ATM'S world wide. BTW, credit cards have a much higher level of protection than debit cards.

We had it happen to us at a supermarket ATM in Cancun. This kind of problem is widespread across all countries but the thing is though Temptation has strict access controls, it's not accessible to the public. You can only enter the premises if you have a bracelet and are a paying guest or are a staff member. It shouldn't be happening there.
Thanks for the info on the previous guests' issues, Steve. We thought the same thing...that using the resort's machine would be reasonably safe, for all the reasons you discussed. We've done the forensics on our account with our credit union, and took a good look at our online statement. We can clearly see the one legitimate cash withdrawal at TTR in the middle of June...and outside of our own bank, we haven't withdrawn cash from an ATM other than our own bank's for the last 4 months, except the one time at TTR. While it may not be TTR's machine, it should be incumbent upon the management to look at these cases of fraud, and find a way to provide their guests a good, reputable bank with which to get cash, and if they see such a trend, it's time to address it. It's an issue of confidence and good faith. After all, if you can't trust the ATM at TTR, what else might we not trust? You're right Steve, it shouldn't be happening there.
I've used a lot of atms in Mexico but the one at Temptation charged way more than any others for user fees and my exchange fees. Lesson learned and stopped using it and any other Mexican atm that dispenses us currency.
