I am at the Gran Caribe and it was traveling towards Plaza Forum. Those that saw it said it was a Whale Shark. That coming from two divers with over 20 yrs here in Cancun. They said it was really big and chillin towards the top of the water.

    Glad everyone's ok!

**Edit: Sorry, just saw it was a whale shark. Well that's kinda cool, then :) But... isn't it WAY off-season for them?

Whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea, feed on microscopic sea organisms, by filtration (so far as I know, they have no "teeth" at all). They are docile, and arranging tours for the purpose of getting a chance to see them, and swim with them, a big deal here.

Whale sharks are harmless to humans, but not normally seen this time of year or in shallow water.

    What's up?

    Sharks

I'm glad to hear whale sharks are not a threat to humans but did anyone happen to ask the shark that bit that lady, what type of shark he is and if he has changed over to eating humans? Tastes change....

Whale sharks feed on plankton, small floating or drifting organisms. V, actually they do have teeth, about 3000 very tiny but pretty much useless as far as teeth go. They serve as filters.

the only way the teeth would get to you is if you were in the water and they ran into you. Kind of like getting hit by a car with teeth.

When the woman was attacked by the shark a few weeks ago (nurse shark in labour), they flew helicopters over the area looking for the poor thing. They reported then seeing a whale shark in front of the Ritz. I thought it was odd too and asked around, apparently there are some whale sharks that hang out in this region all year round and don't make the usual migration with the pod. First I had heard of them being so close to Cancun, but I guess it's not that uncommon. Totally harmless, a joy to have the experience of swimming with them, truly a high point in my life.

F*ck, f*ck, f*ck, f*ck, f*ck. A NURSE shark? Please tell me something to assuage my fears. I'm in the water 3-4 days a week and these murky days have me seeing grinning demons behind every goggle hallucination and eye floater. I thought the nursies were docile? Throw me a bone here! :)
