Sorry if this is the wrong spot for this.

We are traveling to TTR from LAX (visiting wifes family in LA first then off to TTR) to Cancun with a layover in Houston. Question is will we need to recheck our bags in Houston for the flight to Cancun? I have done quite a bit of international travel (germany, india, etc) but have read some forums where folks had to recheck bags prior to leaving the US. Any advice would be appreciated. Traveling on United....

My experience has been (I travel frequently out of country for business) is that if you are connecting thru Houston from LAX, then no, you shouldn't have to recheck your bags. If you're flying to Houston, staying the night, then yes.

Also, if you are coming back to the US (and from your comment I think you know) is that the first entry port (ie airport) you have to go thru customs/immigration then re-check your bags for your connection.

We are connecting thru Atlanta from Detroit, and I'm pretty sure we don't have to recheck our bags.

See you in a few weeks!

If it's a connecting flight, and it sounds like it is, then no.
Your flight itinerary will show it as a connecting flight and CUN
as your final departure. When you check your baggage at LAX
ask the CSR to dbl ck and ease your concerns.
On your return flight if you have a connecting flight (In the USA)
after you clear customs, you will collect your ck'd in luggage at baggage
claim and drop them off at a baggage drop for connecting flights.
Just follow the signs, all will be good.
    Enjoy your trip!

edit... Looks like I hit enter too late.. hrdway8 answered your question

we have never been on a plane, or been in the airport here in St. Louis. our plane leaves at 8am and we are to be at the airport at 6am. we have no idea on what we are going to go threw or if it will be a smooth ride for us. so if anyone has anything that would be good addvice please throw it out there. we are open ears for suggestions from our friends at TTR.

U will be fine. Don't forget if u take some "toys". There is a chance when u get to Cancun that u will get the red light at your arrival. Don't worry though. Happens to us every year. Just be bold and do what I do. I (the husband) make sure to have the bag and when try open to the 10" toy, I say to be careful because that is my tooth brush. Or some other phrase that makes the security (usually woman) blush and rush through us

    Toys

Must say I just had fun with a male customs rep in Fort Lauderdale a few weeks ago! Have to be honest I wonder if the person watching the camera know and likes 2 pick on coworkers to search certain bags knowing what they will find!

    Lol! Tina

Don't stress about it. As long as you arrive 2 hours before your flight you will be fine. Don't forget your passport! You will get paperwork to fill out on the flight down (try to remember to bring a pen to fill this out). Basically you just follow the mass of people to where you need to go at each stop.

On the way back from Cancun to the US if you have a layover then you will have to grab your bags after you pass security, go through the next set of people with your luggage, and then recheck your bags. You will then have to go through the normal security again and get to your gate for you flight back home.

    Here's my .02:

    - pack your swimsuits in your carry-on bag in case your checked bag doesnt arrive with you, so you can change and hang out at the pool.

-pack any medicine and some essential small toiletries in your carry on bag for the same reason. Just remember that liquids and gels all have to fit in a quart zip lock or TSA will make you check them.

-mark your checked bag with a colorful stripe, baggage handle or stencil something on it to make it more identifiable on the baggage carousel, or to the airline baggage staff that may have to pick it out of a pile of delayed bags

-triple check that you have your passports

-bring some snacks to eat on the flights

-have some small bills handy to tip the shuttle driver and bell guy

-remember to take a pen to fill out customs forms on the flight

-when you land in Mexico, you get your bags, then stand in line and go thru immigration, where they stamp your passport and send you to customs

-customs is like a game show, you press a button and get a green light or red light. red light means that they inspect your bags, green means go

-you then will be greeted by an english-speaking semi-official looking person with a name badge on a lanyard. This will be a time-share salesperson. Tell them "no habla English" or some such thing and keep walking. Do not acknowledge them otherwise.

    - continue outside to look for your shuttle and grab a cocktail at the bar outside the airport.

    -relax, you're officially on vacation!!
