Welcome to the forum.. When we went down in March, we used American for bigger ticket items like jewelry/duty-free booze/gifts/excurssions and saved the mexican pesos for tips and cheaper items. Hope that helps. Isku
We're headed down for the 6th time and taking USD. While down there we tip in whatever we have. One thing though.. try to get rid of all of your pesos before you leave. You can't exchange it in Canadian banks so I'm going to assume you can't in others.
Thanks for the info guys, I'm sure it will come in usefull...We have to keep some Pesos back for the exit tax I believe? I don't think we'll have a problem changing currency back at the outlet we got it from.
Easy to remember: Tip the bartenders heavily and often. I haven't had to ask for a drink in years. (Not kidding.)
We've never needed pesos for anything in Cancun. Most places take American currency or credit cards. Plus at TTR we personally never even feel the need to leave the resort, which means that all you'll need is money for tips, and we find that US Dollars work fine for that as well. We usually take around $150-200 in one-dollar bills to tip the bartenders, housekeepers, and waiters. This past trip we averaged about $20 in tips per day that we gave out.
You are right. This year they had stopped accepting USD at the airport but WOULD except sterling - £38 each at check in. We took a mix of USD and Pesos. We already had some USD and mainly used those to tip. Small notes of Pesos were very useful for the bus.
We always tip the maid, servers and bartenders. You will get service quicker and they will really make or break your trip. Totally worth it to us.
