Hi, I've been having a problem trying to exchange some northern irish banknotes in cancun. They are still pounds sterling but everywhere keeps telling me they can only change bank of England notes. Any suggestions of how to get round this, it's very frustrating.
Excuse me for being a bit cheeky but you cant even use NI banknotes in Nottingham, UK! Spent a great weekend in Belfast several years ago and bought a few NI banknotes home with me. It is legal tender in England but nobody had ever seen them before and looked at me like it was money from Mars. Only suggestion I can make is maybe try and find some NI tourists and have them change them for you, I doubt anywhere in Cancun will accept them.
The best and easiest way is to order the money from your own bank at home before you leave. It may cost you a little bit more, but at least you have it when you arrive and don't have to worry about anything but enjoying yourself right away.
