Anyone been to Belize? My friend is getting married at Ambergris Caye ,(San Pedro) Belize. I found a flight on Maya Island Air from Belize City to Ambergis Caye but what is the best way to go from Cancun to Belize City. I also saw some companies that offer ferry service from the coast to the island.
I've taken the bus from Cancun to Belize City, long day but not too bad depending on whether you make connections or not. You can take an ADO bus to Chetumal, then there are buses going from Chetumal to Belize City. The Maya Regional Air site says they have Cancun-Belize City flights but when I tried to book they said "unavailable", but you could try to contact them. From Belize to the Cayes, there are water taxis, times vary and they are small boats on open water, if you're up for the ride it's a lot cheaper. Up until recently there were flights to Chetumal from Cancun with MayaAir but they cancelled the route. I just found the site that has waterjets from Chetumal to San Pedro, looks like a good option rather than bus then water taxi or plane....San Pedro Water Taxi | Belize Water Taxi | San Pedro to Chetumal Daily | San Pedro Water Jets Express
BTW, any chance to avoid Belize City is a plus, it's one of the only places I have traveled where I truly wanted to get out as fast as possible. Two steps off the bus and I had men physically grabbing me and pulling me, telling me I was going to buy them a drink, buy their drugs, not just offers, they were brutally and physically aggressive with me.......Once in the Cayes I was in heaven, but Belize City was a nightmare.
D, Great advice from Canuck. I suggest you check both Maya Air and Tropic Air and check from Corozal to Ambergris Caye. I took the water taxi from Belize City one time. They said 45 minutes and it was 2.5 hours. Stopping and waiting along the way at Caye Caulker. I flew one of those lines back to B.C. as I had a car there. B.C. is nowhere I want to spend the night. But I heard you can get to A.C. from Corozal both by air and by boat. It is close to Chetumal and would cut some bus time off the trip. Good luck.
Maya Air is great! I went from Corozal to San Pedro with them a few times. Short trip, and you can't beat the views
