Does anyone know where I can hear live Cuban music performed, here, in Cancun? And, is there anywhere I where can I hear a "big band" Cuban sound, live?

Sabor Latino in Plaza Hong Kong has a great live Cuban band every night, I think. At least every time I've been there. (They alternate between a DJ and the live band.)

It's a great place to go salsa/merengue dancing, no matter what your skill level is. Whenever I go, I see people of all ages, maybe with a tendency toward an older crowd.

It's best to go kind of late, around 11 - 12, because there aren't many people there before that.

*Edit: my fiance tells me that he thinks the Cuban band at Sabor Latino mostly plays Fridays and Saturdays. Sounds right to me.*

La Bodeguita del Medio in the Hotel Zone also has live Cuban bands. Thursdays are ladies' night (ladies drink free!) and the place tends to fill up around 9 or 10, I think. Last time I went on a Thursday it was mostly a Cuban band playing, with some recorded music as well. The food is also awesome. It's a bit calmer atmosphere, since it's a restaurant/bar, not a club... but they do have a dance floor.

My thanks to those who've responded, so far. I was thinking of going out to Isla for the night, but I think I'll stay here and start checking out these places you've recommended- starting with the Mambo Cafe, which happens to be a five minute walk from where I live! I don't normally stay out late, but I could see a Tigres game, then go to the Mambo. The timing would be just about right!

Thanks again, and keep the suggestions coming: this may not be high culture, such as I mentioned on another thread, but it's something, eh?

There is a vitality to Cuban music that I find appealing, and I'd like to experience it a little more.
